Semily district

Between the towns of Nová Paka and Lomnice nad Popelkou, there is arising, on steep basaltic hill, the ruin of Kumburk castle. However, when this castle, in past named as Goldenburg or Kolburg, was founded, is unknown.

Anyway, there is known a fact from written messages, that the castle was probably established in 1300 by members of powerful Hronovice Parentage. This family lived in this area since middle of 13th century. There was, first of all, Pakoslav (he founded the town of Stará Paka). Anyway, this notice comes from 1325. The first known owner of Kumburk, there was Markvart of Goldenburg from Markvartice-Wartenberg Parentage. In the course of Hussite wars, the castle was in possession of Captain Hynek Krušina of Lichtenburk and Kumburk. He was great well-wisher of Hussites and belonged to many Bohemian aristocrats who protested against burning of Master John Huss. Thanks to this unquiet period, he let to build the outer fortification. However, Kumburk Castle changed their owners quite often. In 1529, the castle was in possession of Trčka of Lípa Parentage. In 1607, Jan Rudolph Trčka sold this dominion to Zikmund Smiřicky of Smiřice.

Since this time period, the castle was not inhabited any more. After White Hill Battle, the ownership of Smiřický Parentage was confiscated, and the dominion obtained Albrecht Wallenstein. However, the owners changed again very often and quickly. Swedish troops seized the castle in during 30-years war and used it as their support point. However, when the war was over, the castle was completely demolished in 1658, according to the order of Emperor Ferdinand III. So, the castle could not be taken as fortresses suitable for defence of the country. Afterthat, when the castle was scattered by means of several detonations, only building material remained on spot.

Nevertheless, most necessary building works, effected in the course of 20th century, secured the rests of fortification, buildings and ceilings. From the castle, there is marvellous view to Giant Mountains panorama. Kumburk is very popular place, especially thanks to its round view. Karel Hynek Mácha became one of most known visitors. You find memorable plate in rests of castle tower, reminding this event.
