Novohradské Mountains cover total area of 162 sq. km. on the Czech-Austria border. The highest peak of 1072 metres is located in the Žofín Highlands. Novohradské Mountains are a valuable area with many wonders of the nature. This may include: Terčino údolí, Hojná voda or Žofínský prales. Thanks to its almost intouched nature, the area was in the year 2000 declared as a natural park. Until recently the majority of Novohradské Mountains had been situated on the borderline where the tourism had very limited options. After the abolition of these restrictions vast forest areas were made accessible. More than 75% of the Novohradské Mountains are covered with trees - mostly conifers, but other parts are covered with mixed forest or broadleaf forest.
