Castle Spis is built on a travertine hill and is one of the largest central-European castles. First settlements appeared there in the Stone Age and the oldest part of the castle itself is its tower (11-12th century). The whole castle is made of travertine. In the course of centuries the castle expanded and its additions made it even more majestic. In 1780, it whole burned down and remained abandoned ever since. Today, the Slovakian National Museum administers it. There are regularly held interesting events and the castle also offers and unforgettable panorama. Near the castle there are travertine mounds where are endangered species, both animals and plants. Every cultural and historic heritage is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage sites list and is also part of the local nature trail.
