Pieniny - Slovakia

Extent: 46 km²

Pieniny is mostly limestone mountain range of East Beskydy, taking part of North Slovakia in district Stará Lubovňa. Its relief is montaneous and hilly with rising formations of white limestones, known as „bradla“.

Highest peak: Vysoké Skalky (1050 m).

Surface: is afforested, mixed pine-wood forests, meadows and glades take the areas where trees are missing.

Climatic zone: moderately warm and rather cold.

Pieniny area was declared as National Park in 1967. Canyon of Dunajec-river is most popular section of this area, where the river hollowed out its way throughout mountain range.

The town of Litmanova is known not only for an "appearance" of the Virgin Mary on Zvir Mountain in 1990 to 1995. The town is known for its ski resort as well. There, except for local skiers, go more and more skiers from abroad, especially the Polish. We went there for a one day skiing. Regardless less snow there, we enjoyed skiing very much.

If you plan family trips for the autumn, you should visit the Pienin area, more precisely the picturesque village of Cerveny Klastor. In addition to the sightseeing tours, you will also experience one amazing adventure on the Dunajec River. The Goral highlanders will make you a beautiful gorge surrounded by tall rocks, colorful greenery and winding meanders.
