Západné Tatry - Roháče (West Tatra Mountains) - Slovakia

Extent: 400 km²

West Tatra Mountains form part of Western Carpathian Mountains, and are situated in north part of Slovak Republic. Its part – Roháče – has Alps´ character.

Highest peak: Bystrá (2248 m).

Surface: afforested, pines, in higher sites, there are to be found dwarfish pine-woods, olough-tails and lichens.

Climatic zone: mostly cold.

Mountain nucleus is formed with granites and crystalic slates, on surface with limestones and dolomites.

On a territory with rare fauna and flora, there are to be found mountain lakes (plesa), tourist communities and well marked tourist trails into valleys or to the tops (peaks).

A part of West Tatra Mountains became a part of Tatra National Park in 1987.

Namesti Zadosti Slovenskeho Naroda square was the place we visited previously. Back then, we already noticed the Slovakian Museum of Enviromental Protection and Caves.

On this day, we visit Namesti Zadosti Slovenskeho Naroda, a square in Liptovsky Mikulas quite hidden from sight. On this small piece of land adjacent to historic center of the city, significant historic events took place.

The Western Tatras is very popular and frequented mountain range. Treks here, the main ridge especially, are amazing and people who go there long remember it. Ostry Rohac is perhaps the most attractive and most well known peak in this area. Many tourists hike across it every year.

Like the High Tatra West Tatra is also popular area. You can have some remarkable outdoor experience there. Both mountains seems to be one whole. However, unlike the High Tatra, West Tatra are lower. Its mountains are more covered of grass. Barance mountain (2 185 m) is a popular locality by tourists. This mountain is situated in the south of this mountain ridge.

Not far away from Liptovský Hrádok is situated the newest and the most visited nature museum in Slovakia – Liptov Village Museum in Pribylina. In the fourth part of our series about the safety on the mountains, we focus on morphologically related to mountains, and therefore we will focus on the Western and low Tatra. Their bedrock consists mainly of alumina surface, but not only part of Roháče and the section of Ďumbier - Chopok.
