At that time period, when Poděbrady was in possession of Kunštát Family, the town passed a period of its greatest development. We have to stress that very important person in Kunštát Parentage was George of Poděbrady. He was nominated as a King of Bohemia in 1458.
In 1472, the town of Poděbrady obtained its town-escutcheon and honour rights.
At present, Poděbrady is well-known as spa-town – there are healed here the heart ilnesses and diseases of circulation system. The town is situated in distance of 50 kms in eastern direction of Prague. It belongs to most warmest places with most stabile weather in Czech Republic. It is a ton, not great with its extention, there are living here 13400 inhabitants approx. This picturesque town is popular between tourists and an active spa-traffic is prevailing here.
In city centre, we find George of Poděbrady Square, with equastrian statue of St.George.
Nearby, it is placed a castle (mentioned above). In its interiors, there are: students´ hostel, theatre and several restaurants, cinema and also a small museum.
Further highlights: spa colonnade, connecting square with railway station. Its length is 1km approx. Its part is formed with arranged park with two fountains, one of them is lightened in the evening.
Provided you wish to do something positive for your health, would you visit and taste one of some springs of healing water, placed in the park. Strong ferriferous-water (Poděbradka), with its special taste and odour sources out. However, many people are not enthusiastic of this combination. Poděbradka can be bought also in shops, nevertheless, its taste has nothing common with flavour of water from spring.
Town of Poděbrady starts its life especially in the evening, when it is full of people, looking for entertainment, with big choice on weekends. Provided you just passed city centre, took your refreshment in one of many pleasant restaurants or caffées and tasted some sorts of famous ice-creams, you can take a passage with a steamer. Its stop is to be found near to the castle under a bridge. Your choice could be the following: to go to Nymburk, or to take the opposite direction – to confluence of Elbe with Cidlina-river. Both variants are worth to try.
Provided you wish to do something – as sporting activities – would you pack into your car, prepared for excursion – your bycicle ofŕ wheel-skates. The countryside around is flat, and you can make your excursion along Elbe-river far, or in direction, whatever you like.
Further, you can here play tennis, golf, squash, or pay short excursion in riding-ground
(situated on left side, not far from a bridge leading to city centre, if you are arriving from Prague). We cannot forget swimming pool named „Jezero“- (Lake). You reach this place crossing a road- bridge, but we wish to recommend you – it would be better to cross foot-bridge, placed nearby. If you choose this way, you cannot pass another place of interest – it is a building of water-electric power station. A walk along this very interesting building (from architectonical point of view), joined with water roars, takes you a special experience, for sure.
In Jezero area you can, except bathing, play volley-ball or minigolf, have a seat at a kiosk or do fishing (not in swimming pool area, where you have to pay).
Separated Nuda-beach is also available, you can visit it, provided you prefer this way of sunshining.
Provided you wish to prolong your stay in this pleasant town and you do not use the services of some of hotels or pensions, you can rent a chalet or build a tent in camping place, distant
3 kms approx. of city centre - it is valid in summer saison, of course.
In camping place area, you find pleasant restaurant as well.
