Published: 9.7.2010
George of Poděbrady Square as well as adjoined pedestrian zone belong to most visited areas of this West Bohemian town. Since 13th century, the construction of groups of houses started to be done, on place of former grocery and horse markets. This development continued until 18th century.

Originally built Baroque houses were constructed as several-floor buildings, with narrow front facades, having the names in accordance with their proprietors and rare visitors (its total number reached 160 units). Lower part of the square is decorated with a fountain with statue of so called „Wild Man“, picturing Hercules with Cheb escutcheon. Turning to the right, you pass through narrow street downstairs to Church square, where you find St. Nicolas Church of Romanesque style, as well as St.Elizabeth Church (1220-1230). However, the towers, arising up to the sky, were destructed several times. Nevertheless, its renewal and solemn consecration was effected even in 2008.

From left side of low square, you can walk towards Cheb Castle, built in the second half of 12th century. Its spaces are open for public and are being used for various cultural events. Cheb historical nucleus was completely reconstructed in the second half of 20th century and, since 1981, declared as town´s monumental quarter area.
