Cheb City Centre
Originally built Baroque houses were constructed as several-floor buildings, with narrow front facades, having the names in accordance with their proprietors and rare visitors (its total number reached 160 units). Lower part of the square is decorated with a fountain with statue of so called „Wild Man“, picturing Hercules with Cheb escutcheon. Turning to the right, you pass through narrow street downstairs to Church square, where you find St. Nicolas Church of Romanesque style, as well as St.Elizabeth Church (1220-1230). However, the towers, arising up to the sky, were destructed several times. Nevertheless, its renewal and solemn consecration was effected even in 2008.
From left side of low square, you can walk towards Cheb Castle, built in the second half of 12th century. Its spaces are open for public and are being used for various cultural events. Cheb historical nucleus was completely reconstructed in the second half of 20th century and, since 1981, declared as town´s monumental quarter area.
Most important places of interest:
Špalíček: (Small House Block): a complex of eleven merchant houses.
Pachelbel House No. 3: first written notice comes of 14th century. Count Albrecht of Wallenstein was murdered there in 1634. Now, the seat of Regional Museum.
Gabler House No.6: originally it was Gothical house, Virgin Mary relief preserved above
the entrance.
Facade in Rococco style, decorated with four year seasons.
Schirdinger House No. 7: this building was built in 15th century.
Werndl House No. 28: Werndl of Lehenstein Family is owner of this building since 1687.
Black Bear House No. 32: the house served as a pub, Cheb Country Assembly met there.
New Town Hall No. 163: a building of Baroque style, of 18th century.
A Fountain with a statue of „Wild Man“: stone fountain, constructed in 1606.
