Jindřichův Hradec

Published: 6.8.2007
The town of Jindřichův Hradec is situated in northeastern part of Bohemia direct on the line of 15th longitude, passing the Church of Virgin Mary and neighbouring tower in the historical centre of the city.

The oldest notice of this wonderful town is from 1220, period, when owned by Henry I. In the second half of 16th century there were built on square and along surrounding streets many civic houses. The town experienced its most stormy development in this period. In 1950 the city centre was declared as Town Protected Reservation.

A must you have tosee is a visit of the Gothic Castle and a Renaissance Chateau, the pleasant event will be a relax or a walk  around  a pond of Vajgar.

The complex of a castle and a chateau is the third most extended one, immediately after the Castle complex of Prague and Český Krumlov, has been declared as a National Cultural Monument in 1996. There are approx. 320 rooms altogether, to the entrance are being used with approx. 500 keys, in the interiors there are kept approx. 7000 artificial artefacts and nearly the same number of books. The rich collection fund is presenting with over 1000 pieces of pictures, furniture, china and other artificials objects. The most preserved and functionning space in the castle is so called „Black Kitchen“ from 15th century.

To the complex belongs also new reconstructed water-mill with water electric station of Křižík. The original mill was established in 1551. Unfortunately, in 1773 the mill completely burnt out, but four years later it was working again. In 1888 the mill was re-built for water electric station, unique in Bohemia at that time. Mr. František Křižík installed personally on spot the Francis turbine  and dynamo, the placing of the second turbine was made in 1902. The water electric power station was in service up to 1996. It is working at present again and producing -according to the water stand - 15-50KW.

If you have the pleasure you can make a trip with narrow-gauge railway and enjoy the beauty of local nature. You have the choice of two routes. The longer one, (46 kms), is from Jindřichův Hradec to Obrataň, the shorter is leading to Nová Bystřice (33 kms).
