Třeboň

Published: 20.5.2008
This beautiful town, spreaded in the middle of countryside full of ponds, is known from 12th century, when along one way passing throughout frontier forests there was founded a community with mansion courtyard.

Enterprising man Vítek of Prčice, first known member of ramified Vítkov Parentage, obtained the area surrounding Třeboň from a King for his services. Recently after its foundation, the community passed into ownership of Cisterciac Monastery of Zwettl in Upper Austria. In 1250, brothers Pilgrim and Ojir (from Landstein branch of Vítkov Parentage) got this region back into their possession. Since 1341, the place is signed as a town and since 1366, we can notice its Czech name (the town was named as Witigenove or Wittingau). The owner of Třeboň, including neighbouring dominion, became brothers of Rosenberg. During their rule, the town obtained its wealth and importance. Rosenbergs founded a monastery and in 1376 they gave a town the privilege of King towns. At the end of 14th century, the town was fortified by wall fortifications and moats. In a periode of Hussite wars, the town became an impregnable fortress and resisted several attacks. A real bloom of town was to be noted since middle of 15th century. Peter IV. of Rosenberg  (1462-1523) watched more - as his predecessors - the economy on his own properties and his man Stephen of Netolice, founded a fame of local pond construction.

Anyway, biggest boom reached Třeboň at the beginning of 17th century, especially during rule of last Rosenbergs, brothers William and Peter Rosenbergs. At that time, concentrated attention was given to economical development of the whole dominion, mainly to pond construction and brewery. However, after death of last Rosenberg member, Peter Vok, in Třeboň1611, the dominion, including town, passsed (by means of heritage), into hands of Svamberg Parentage. They lost it completely - for their participation in  Estates Uprising against Habsburgs. The dominion was confiscated and Třeboň was within years 1622-1660 in possession of Habsburgs. In 1660, the dominion obtained Jan Adolf, Prince of Schwarzenberg, for his personal services. And this Parentage gave a lot of advantages to the town. So, in their possession was Třeboň untill  beginning of 20th century.

In middle of 19th century, Třeboň was declared as district town. Further impulse to more intensive development of the whole region brought a construction of important communications, especially railway line in 1871, joining town with Vienna. After 1st World War, was all Schwarzenbergs´ economical property (within the scope of land reforms) passed to state. 2nd World War required in Třeboň its victims, too. Anyway, light industry penetrated into town (textile factory as well as agricultural works). In 1960, Třeboň became spa-town.

As to local monuments:you find here castle built in Renaissance style, characteristic for Třeboň, situated on southwestern part of historical nucleus.

Třeboň is connected with spa activities. In region, you find a lot of healing sources (peat, mud). Both are used for healing of disorders of moving apparatus, rheumatic diseases, stages after-injuries and after-operations and total body-recondition. This tradition was created on base of  existency of strong peat and mud stocks.

Town is proud of its brewery, with long-years tradition. The oldest equimpemt for beer production, from historical point of view, was founded by Augustinian Order in 1367. Anyway, the beer is produced here up to now. A company Bohemia Regent Ltd. belongs to actual owners of this traditional South Bohemian beer.

The environs of Třeboň are very suitable for cycling tours, yopu find here a big choice of cyclo-routes.
