Published: 6.5.2022
A mere kilometer from the famous settlement of Hejnice in the Jizera mountains, there is another famous site - Libverda spa. Composer Carl Maria von Weber found his inspiration to write the opera of Der Freischuetz.
As early as the 15th century, rumors about the healing of the local spring have spread. Saxon Elector August I ordered the water to be transported to the Dresden Court or the commander Albrecht of Wallenstein for their campaigns. However, in the second half of the 18th century, the first treatment facilities began to be built around the spring, and the present looks of the baths are rooted in the 19th century. Their development was largely allowed thanks to the local ruler family of the Clam-Gallas, who had built many spa buildings, a promenade and an Empire mansion.
The spa was visited by many important personalities, in 1779, for example, Emperor Franz Joseph II himself.Later, he resided, for example, the renaissance linguist Josef Jungmann, the writer Franz Kafka, the minister Jan Masaryk and the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt.
Besides the healing springs, the pure mountain air and the surrounding virgin nature also have a great effect here. The Jizera Mountains undoubtedly are one of the most beautiful parts of the Czech Republic and invites you to walk around. From the Spa Libverda you can go for short walks along the park and surrounding outlooks, as well as for mountain hikes.
A red and then blue tourist sign will lead you to Smrk, the highest peak of the Jizera Mountains. From here, you will see an unforgettable view over a hundred kilometers in front of you in good visibility. In addition to a large part of the Jizera Mountains, you can see the Giant Mountains, the Lusatian Mountains, Jested and some peaks in Poland.
On the outskirts of Libverda Spa, you should certainly not miss the unique Obri sud restaurant, built in the shape of a wooden barrel. And of course, stop in the neighboring Hejnice, which is famous mainly for the Baroque pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and the local Franciscan monastery.
The unmistakable and easy-to-spot dominant of the North Bohemian landscape is one of the most visited places in the region. And this holds true in every season. The summit is easily accessible by cable car, a network of hiking trails and abundant curves of the asphalt road. Upstairs you will be amazed at the view of the entire northern half of Bohemia, as well as the unique multifunctional rotary hyperboloid building. It's Jested.
Just a few kilometers before the Elbe water leaves the Czech Republic, it flows past the majestic Decin Castle. The town itself and its surroundings offer plenty of attractions to visit, in addition to the castle and the Rose Garden, the Labské pískovce PLA and the nearby Bohemian Switzerland.
Downhill skiing or snowboarding is probably not waiting for us this year, but cross-country skiers also offer great variety in these times. Today we will go to the Jizera Mountains. Cross-country skiing conditions are great, tracks beautifully prepared.
Under Certova Mountain in the Giant Mountains, the mountain town of Harrachov is situated on the Mumlava River. The owner of the local estate - Count Jan Harrach - brought the first skis to Bohemia in the 19th century and the first winter sports took place here soon.
We recommend you Semerink as a great place for a family vacation. Families with small children especially or even beginning skiers will enjoy the vast ski resort of Severak with easy slopes and many ski tows. The slopes are well maintained. There are many trails to chosoe from and to combine. Especially these are great for little children or easy-skiers. Mild slopes, and relatively short slopes are nothing fancy for experienced skiers.
At the confluence of the Černá and Bílá Desná rivers in the Liberec region is the town of Desná. It is by no means interesting in itself, it is worth mentioning the historic churches of the Ascension of the Lord and the Virgin Mary, Riedl's villa from 1895 and the funeral chapel. Lovers of winter sports in particular, but also cyclists and tourists will find theirs here.
As summer approaches, more and more of us set out on new experiences during our free days. The quarantine is gradually being released, offering more and more opportunities to spend time. This weekend we will look at Nové Město pod Smrkem, which is located in the Liberec region. The city lies in the Jizera Mountains, almost on the border with Poland. If you consider yourselves fans of winter weather, you can finally after a long time enjoy true winter in the Czech Republic. Moreover, cross-country skiing is great and we recommend you a trek in the Jizerske Mountains. You would be headed from Horni Polubne to Bedrichov. This trek is of middle-difficulty. It is from 24 to 30 kilometres long (depending on what trail you choose). So how to do this?
Liberec is another important stop in our tour de Bohemia. A university city is famous and infamous for the world championship in cross-country skiing. It is a historical place completely independent on its surrounding.
