CZ, Frenštát pod Radhoštěm – At the Heart of the Beskydy
Published: 5.3.2024
The small Moravian-Silesian town of Frenštát pod Radhoštěm is not a metropolis, but it still attracts tourists from all over the Czech Republic. It serves as a great starting point for the surrounding mountains. After all, it lies in the very heart of the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Mountains, right next to the Beskydy Protected Landscape Area. A great program is taken care of throughout the year. Whether it's hiking and cycling - both are widely run here from spring to autumn, or great winter sports in the form of many slopes and cross-country trails. The railway also leads to Frenštát pod Radhoštěm, so even without a car you can get here comfortably.

The city itself offers a nice historic center with the town hall, the plague column of the Virgin Mary, the statue of St. Florian and the church of St. John the Baptist.

The green and red tourist sign will then take you out of Frenštát along the Beskydy Sky nature trail around the Jiří Raška ski jumping area to the amphitheater in Horečky, behind which there is a wooden trail called Life in the Treetops. This will be appreciated especially by children, because in its vicinity you will find a few more wooden attractions, including the so-called insect hotel. A little further on, cyclists can set off on the Beskydy Trail leading around Horečka Hill and then join one of the many Radegast circuits and make a great trip. Tourists can then go to the mountain Velký Javorník, which is located at an altitude of 918 meters above sea level. At its top is a stylish wooden lookout tower. Barely 2.5 km away is also Malý Javorník, reaching a height of 838 meters above sea level.

Less than 9 kilometers from Frenštát pod Radhoštěm is a very popular tourist destination Pustevny. Located at an altitude of 1018 meters above sea level, this saddle is known for its wooden buildings from the late 19th century and for its modern ski resort. Towards the top called Tanečnice you can continue on the so-called Trail of Wallachia and along the way you can see the statue of the pagan sun god Radegast, after whom the local brewery is named, and conquer the top of Radhošť, which is located at 1129 meters above sea level.

The highest mountain in the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy - Lysá - lies approximately 25 kilometers from Frenštát pod Radhoštěm and it is therefore best to approach it by car. Several routes lead to the 1323 meter high peak. There is a snack bar, a telecommunications transmitter, a cottage and a so-called stroking place. On the way from Lysá hora you can visit the nice Satinské waterfalls.

If you went to Frenštát, it would be a shame not to look at Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, 15 kilometers away. The Wallachian Open-Air Museum, which beautifully depicts the history of folk culture, is worth a visit. They also sell great frgals here.

The region of Bruntal is a quite remote part of the region of Moravia-Silesia. It is situated between the Hruby and Nizky Jesenik mountain ranges. Allegedly, the region of Bruntal is harsh. The inhabitants like to make jokes of themselves by talking about local toothy frogs – a jest of sorts. Don´t worry, however. Come here for there are beautiful places worthy exploring.
