CZ: Kobylí, Vrbice – Unusual Lookout Tower and Picturesque Cellars

If you like to visit non-traditional places and prefer shorter walks, this place will be perfect for you. South Moravia is beautiful in every season, so you can come here at any time. Have you heard about the lookout tower in Kobylí in the Břeclav region?
It is a unique spiral lookout tower, which is barrier-free, ie easily accessible for prams and wheelchairs. It is a relatively new building, the lookout tower was built in 2018. It is only here for a short time, but it is already very popular with many tourists and locals. It offers a wonderful view of the Moravian vineyards, but also of the popular Vrbice, which is only about a kilometer away from the lookout tower.
Although the lookout tower is only less than 8 meters high, it stands at the highest point in the village, namely Kobylím vrch, after which it is also named. Sometimes you may come across the name Homole, as this place is called by the local natives. The spiral structure is located at an altitude of 334 meters above sea level, which at first glance may not seem like a high number, but in South Moravia it is a little different. From Kobylí vrch, you can even see the distant snow-capped peaks of the Austrian Alps, which are up to 200 km away, with good visibility. In addition, when climbing the lookout tower, you will find various interactive signs and questions on the ground that will make you think.
This Moravian area is perfect for cyclists. And it is they, often and very happy, will visit the adjacent village of Vrbice. This village in the Hustopeče microregion is very often compared to the so-called "hobbit village", because there are picturesque wine cellars, which are more reminiscent of hobbit houses, which you can see in the photos.
Lovers of the Lord of the Rings movies do not have to travel to New Zealand, which is famous for these small dwellings. In addition, these houses hide excellent Moravian wines. Picturesque houses also attract visitors with stone entrances with Gothic curved arches. The cellars were allegedly rolled into sandstone on up to seven floors above each other.

Just several kilometers south from Brno there is Rajhrad, a beautiful wine-growing town. There is a unique Benedictine cloister and adjacent to it the Memorial of literature in Moravia. Also, there St Peter and Paul church. To us, Rajhrad is an ideal place for a one-day trip from Brno either by train, car or bike. In summer, one afternoon is enough to enjoy it.

When the Creator was giving he was particularly generous to the south Moravians. Thus, they could call their land the “land of wine.” He gave them the most sun in the Czech lands as well as warm climate doing good to grapes but bolstering recreational activities as well – for instance at Vranovska dam, Brnenska dam or on the lakes near Palava. So what waits here for visitors? Great Moravian landmarks, castles, chateaus, sacral buildings, great works of engineering, border fortresses, and beautiful places in nature. There is no coincidence in south Moravia being the second most interesting locality for tourists right next to Prague.

We are going to conclude our mini-series on Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape in podivin. It is a small town on the way to D2 freeway. This town doesn´t belong to the compound. However, it would be a missed opportunity to not to see it. A uniqe Jewish wedding ceremonial hall or Januv castle (a Liechtenstein structure imitating historical architectonic styles) are just a few to name some landmarks. We are not completely sure how the name Podivin came into existence…

Only some places can in beauty equal Prague. Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape – especially Lednice chateau – is such a place. It really deserves its place in the UNESCO’s cultural heritage list. The House of Liechtenstein realized a unique project for their time and there is almost nothing like this in the world. Come and see with us a small share of what waits for you in Lednice.

It was a forgotten borderline town. Nobody would travel there. Today, it is a growing center of wine where many talented people work. Valtice town is, like Lednice, part of the UNESCO world heritage. Apart from beautiful Renaissance-Baroque chateau or a park, there is the famous Wine Saloon, two beautiful churches, a number of interesting houses, as well as several buildings scattered across the Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape. We recommend you to spend at least couple of hours in Valtice while on you are on your trip across south Moravia. However, the best would be to spend a whole day there.
