CZ, Pernstejn – Castle that Was Never Conquered

Spring is on and the tourist season is underway. Go to nature, culture and do some sightseeing. There are countless of them in the Czech Republic and today you can see Pernštejn Castle with us.
Pernštejn Castle is one of the most visited Moravian monuments. It is located in the South Moravian Region, specifically in the village of Nedvědice, where it has been rising on the rock for several centuries.
The first mention of this massive building dates back to the 13th century, when it was built by the Lords of Pernštejn. At that time, the castle was not so large, but since the turn of the 15th and 16th century, it has undergone several reconstructions and modifications. Whether it was the completion of residential buildings, a newly built courtyard, or murals. As the artistic direction changed during the reconstruction, the originally medieval castle became a Baroque castle. And because of the use of the Nedvědice marble, we can find the castle under the name "marble" today.
You can get to a non-ordinary day atmosphere in the parking lot, which is located below the castle. Whoever wants can go to the castle either through a forest path or along the road. If you do not want to go, you can use the "local transport" - a small wheeled train (60 Kč, a child under 3 years free). I personally recommend to go up the train and go downhill one way. For a family with a little child, the forest path is unsuitable. You can also find nature trails under Pernštejn.
Admission to the castle itself varies according to the tour circuit. If you want to know as much as possible, I would choose the basic circuit. If you do not want to go to the interiors, you can only pay a tour of the "Castle Courtyard", which is without a guide. However, you have access to all the courtyards, shops and some corners - to the castle chapel or dungeon, from which there is a beautiful view of the castle surroundings. And if you want your children to enjoy the tour, be sure to check out the "Lost White Lady" tour.
The castle also boasts many attractions. For example, it widens towards the top, so it has a larger area at the top than on the ground floor. There were also countless fairy tales and films filmed here, such as Three Musketeers, How to Wake the Princess or Van Helsing. Take your time and return to the times of knights and princesses.

Just several kilometers south from Brno there is Rajhrad, a beautiful wine-growing town. There is a unique Benedictine cloister and adjacent to it the Memorial of literature in Moravia. Also, there St Peter and Paul church. To us, Rajhrad is an ideal place for a one-day trip from Brno either by train, car or bike. In summer, one afternoon is enough to enjoy it.

The Holedná game reserve is absolutely exceptional, because not only children but also adults have the opportunity to see and admire the life of wildlife with their own eyes, as it is a purpose-built hunting facility used for professional breeding of mouflon and fallow deer on an area of 327 ha. Although the game reserve is thoroughly fenced on all sides so that the animals do not escape, the whole area looks very large and unrestrained.

When the Creator was giving he was particularly generous to the south Moravians. Thus, they could call their land the “land of wine.” He gave them the most sun in the Czech lands as well as warm climate doing good to grapes but bolstering recreational activities as well – for instance at Vranovska dam, Brnenska dam or on the lakes near Palava. So what waits here for visitors? Great Moravian landmarks, castles, chateaus, sacral buildings, great works of engineering, border fortresses, and beautiful places in nature. There is no coincidence in south Moravia being the second most interesting locality for tourists right next to Prague.

It was a forgotten borderline town. Nobody would travel there. Today, it is a growing center of wine where many talented people work. Valtice town is, like Lednice, part of the UNESCO world heritage. Apart from beautiful Renaissance-Baroque chateau or a park, there is the famous Wine Saloon, two beautiful churches, a number of interesting houses, as well as several buildings scattered across the Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape. We recommend you to spend at least couple of hours in Valtice while on you are on your trip across south Moravia. However, the best would be to spend a whole day there.

We are going to conclude our mini-series on Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape in podivin. It is a small town on the way to D2 freeway. This town doesn´t belong to the compound. However, it would be a missed opportunity to not to see it. A uniqe Jewish wedding ceremonial hall or Januv castle (a Liechtenstein structure imitating historical architectonic styles) are just a few to name some landmarks. We are not completely sure how the name Podivin came into existence…
