About 30 kilometers northeast of Brno lies a beautiful town of Vyskov through which the River Hana flows. The history of the town dates back to the 12th century. For a long time the town belonged to the Olomouc bishopric, i.e. from the 13th to the 19th century. Today its historic center includes beautiful landmarks which have been gradually returned to their former shine and glory.
Several of the most important sights can be found right at Vyskov square. The most famous is definitely a local Renaissance town hall with a white town hall tower. In the center of the square there is a plague column from 1719, which was designed by sculptor Christian Pröbstl to remember the fifty-year-old plague epidemic. There is also a Baroque fountain from the 18th century and a well from 1839. The 17th meridian is also directly passing through the square, which has been marked with a metal plate embedded in the pavement of the square.
Around the Beseda House, go to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was built between the years 1464 and 1466 in late Gothic style, but in the second half of the 18th century it underwent a significant Baroque rebuilding.
Vyskov chateau is also worthy your attention. Originally, however, it was a Gothic castle. Bishop Karel from Liechtenstein rebuilt the castle Renaissance style in the years 1665-1682 according to the project by Giovanni Pietro Tencalla. Today you can visit the Museum of Vyskov, including exhibitions of folk ceramics and, of course, everything connected with the history of the town. Just a short walk away, visit the newly renovated chateau garden, which is listed in the central list of monuments of cultural significance.
If you come with children, do not miss the zoo and DinoPark, or stop at the Aircraft and Ground Engineering Museum at the airport. A very popular aquapark is also popular.
The surroundings of Vyskov are also a very popular area for cyclists. For example, you can go to the karst caves in the region of Blansko, the natural swimming pool in Lulec or folklore in Kyjov. You can easily reach Vyskov by bike even from Brno.
Northwest of Brno, an unusual rock formation, the Malhostovická Pecka, rises from the flat landscape around Malhostovice. In the sunny habitats, the endangered large-flowered passerine grows here, which offers a wonderful spectacle in the spring.
Who around Brno doesn't know about Lulec. Even people from quite afar come here to swim in U Libuse natural swimming pool. Often they stop by to have a snack during bicycle trip. There is a lot to do for bicyclers around these parts.
There is beautiful historical town of Znojmo near the border with Austria on the south of Moravia. It became famous for its wine and cucumbers. Only few know that you can find here, for instance, the relic of St Bonifac, many Middle-Ages landmarks, and that popular TEDx conferences take place there. Let's see Znojmo throughour article and the lense of our videocamera.
The Czech Republic has many beautiful castles and chateaux that are open to the public. Whether in Bohemia or Moravia, the film footage has made Karlštejn everlastingly famous, the same goes for Pernětejn, Bouzov or Křivoklát. But we often forget small towns, townships, and villages where there are castles and chateaux as well. One of such is Lysice Chateau.
Only five kilometers from the district capital of Blansko there is Rajec-Jestrebi, a town of 3.5 thousand by the Svitava River. This town is the northern gateway to the Moravian Karst however also a town where a beautiful chateau is located.
We are going to conclude our mini-series on Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape in podivin. It is a small town on the way to D2 freeway. This town doesn´t belong to the compound. However, it would be a missed opportunity to not to see it. A uniqe Jewish wedding ceremonial hall or Januv castle (a Liechtenstein structure imitating historical architectonic styles) are just a few to name some landmarks. We are not completely sure how the name Podivin came into existence…
Only some places can in beauty equal Prague. Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape – especially Lednice chateau – is such a place. It really deserves its place in the UNESCO’s cultural heritage list. The House of Liechtenstein realized a unique project for their time and there is almost nothing like this in the world. Come and see with us a small share of what waits for you in Lednice.
It was a forgotten borderline town. Nobody would travel there. Today, it is a growing center of wine where many talented people work. Valtice town is, like Lednice, part of the UNESCO world heritage. Apart from beautiful Renaissance-Baroque chateau or a park, there is the famous Wine Saloon, two beautiful churches, a number of interesting houses, as well as several buildings scattered across the Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape. We recommend you to spend at least couple of hours in Valtice while on you are on your trip across south Moravia. However, the best would be to spend a whole day there.
As was told in the first part, now you know why to go to Brno. You know where to start your exploration of the historical district and where to have lunch. What is next? We are going to spend some moments on Svoboda square. There is a mysterious astronomical clock. We cant avoit a visit to Spilberk castle, Villa Tugendhat (under UNESCO) and a functionalist borough around it. Of course, we are going to have a taste of the night life, great beer or wine, and we are going to see some glimpses of local students ’life. So let’s get started!
When I have learned recently that Lonely Planet declared Brno the least interesting city in the Czech Republic I couldn’t understand. Then I realized that it was good they said it after all. Had crowds of tourists been going there every day as they go to Prague it would soon loose its magic. Brno is a city of universities, fun, culture and many small, lovely places. The turning clock in the shape of a male genitalia from which a small glass ball falls out every hour. Smoking road signs are really to be found only here… New York Times was much more smarter. They put Brno on the list of 52 places where to go in 2016!
