Jihlava town
First notice about the town comes of 1233. At that time, the people came here as there was a chance of getting labour possibilities – there is first news about Jihlava coins of 1249. The town was fortificated around with solid city-walls and became a seat of Mining (Upper) Court for long time period.
At the end of 14th century the mining of silber declined but town-development was secured by trade and handicraft production. However, 30-years war damaged positive development in the future. The re-establishment took one hundred years, the houses in city centre were re-built in Baroque style. In 18th and 19th century Jihlava became bigger manufacturer of cloths in Habsburg Monarchy.
In Jihlava there is taken place Festival of Choral Arts and Organ Festival. You find here a museum, theatre, two cinemas, exhibition hall and gallery, ZOO and House of Culture. In 1951 the historical nucleus of town was declared as Town´s Monumental Reservation. You find here rests of city-walls of 14th century. To those most important belongs Jihlava´s Town Hall. It is placed in Masaryk Square and during its history it was re-built several times. The square noted also many important changes. In middle of 16th century, after big fire, it was re-built in Renaissance and successively in 17th and 18th century in a Baroque style.
A plague column comes from 1690, two stony fontains from 1797. You can see there the original preserved stony pavement of 19th century. During 1683-1689 there was constructed a church of St. Ignacius of Loyola. The town´s symbol of the town became the only preserved tower of city fortification – Tower od Lord´s Mother. Now, it serves as a view-tower for public. Further important monument is a Jewish cemetery founded in 1869 and reconstructed in 1993.
