Česká Lípa

The original community was situated outer bailey of water castle Lipý. As a town, it was created in second half of 13th century. First written notice comes of 1337 in old documents. The town was placed on important merchant road, thanks to this fact, the handicraft started to develop.

A big development of town, based on the privilege of Kings´ towns, finished with arrival of Hussite  revolutions. The town successively levelled with its consequence and consequence of so called Lužice-wars in the course of 15th century. Town´s houses were renewed, the castle started to be reconstructed, first in Gothic, later in Renaissance style. In 16th century, the villa, named as Červený dům (Red Small House) was added to the castle. After 30-year´s war, there were built several Baroque buildings and statues, most remaining houses were re-built in Baroque style. This time-period reminds Plague Column on a square.                                         

In spite of the fact that the town was (similar as many other town at that time) stroke with plague epidemy, it belonged to most populated towns of Bohemia. However, the town did not prevented from big fires in 1787 and 1820. Afterthat, new walling houses in Biedermeier and Neo-classical styles were constructed. 19th century meant especially the development of industrial branches, foodstuffs, distillery if spirits, hides manufacturing as well as pianos production, and at the same time, the development of political, cultural and social life. After Second World War, the town successively revived,and the historical nucleus was declared as a town´s protected zone.                     

In Česká Lípa you find House of Culture Crystal, cinema Crystal, Jirásek Theatre, Town´s Library, Regional Museum and gallery and other cultural places. In town it is to be found many sports centres. Česká Lípa has nearly 40000 inhabitants, it is placed along Ploučnice-river, distant approx. 60 kms in northern direction of Prague.
