Sázava Abbey
Locality type:
Castles
Place:
Benešov district

Former Benedictine abbey was founded in 1032 by hermit Procopius, together with Prince Oldrich. It happened so after their meeting, when a water, which Procopius offered to exhaused Prince, was changed into wine. This fact caused that Procopius became Prince´s spiritual counsellor, and the first abbot of new abbey. In a monastery, the monks maintained spiritual way of life and literature in ancient Slave language. They extended reference to St. Cyrill and Method, two brothers of Thessaloniki, from Bulgarian-Macedonian dialect, and restored to life cultural relations with eastern Europe. All this lasted till 1096, when this Old-Slave liturgy was prohibited in the course of ecclesiastical religious rites. Shortly afterthat, these Old-Slave monks had to leave the locality. Later, the Benedictine Order from Břevnov came, spreading the liturgy in Latin language.

Later, the monastery was reconstructed and re-built several times, but in spite of this fact, the main church was never terminated. At the beginning of 15th century, in the course of Hussite wars, its construction was definitively stopped. The monastery was burnt down and the monks had to leave the seat. So, from Gothic face of the monastery, there was preserved only a torso of St.Procopius church, abbot´s chapel, crypt and a part of chapter hall, decorated with painters of Emperor Charles IV. In 17th century, the monastery was rebuilt into Baroque form. Later, in 1785, when the monastery lost its religious function (it was definitely closed by order of Emperor Joseph II, within scope of his reforms). So, abbey complex got into trouble - was sold by auction – and a private person bought it. Nevertheless, in 19th century, the buildings were, by care of new owners, partially arranged for needs of luxury chateau lodging, and changed in Neo-Renaissance style. In 1950, the chateau was nationalized. At present, the monastery area  is declared as national cultural monument, where you can follow various styles since Romanesque till Neo-Renaissance style.

In former monastery, there were found springs of spiritual and cultural life of Great Moravia and beginnings of development of Bohemian countries. Old-Slave culture was kept here for long time period, thanks to St.Procopius, its founder. And just with his personality, there is connected the abbey´s history. Moreover, St. Procopius was the first Bohemian, who was declared as saint on base of Roman Pope order in 1204. Old-Slave Sázava exposition is situated just in spaces of the castle-monastery. This exhibition tries to make acquaintance with church and political life of Old-Slave time period, as the politics of powerful class influenced a life in Sázava monastery.

The exhibition contains also many archaeological findings and models of Middle Age sacral architecture as well as copies of Middle Age manuscripts in Old-Slave and Latin languages.
