River description:
Smědá river sources under Jizera Hill in an altitude of 875 m. It flows in northwest and northern direction to state border with Poland. In Poland, it mouths into Lužická Nisa river, so it belongs to Odra-river-basin. Its river-basin in Czech Republic makes 274 km². From Smědava Chale, the river flows through bouldary river-bed with an enormous slope to Bílý potok (White Brook). However, only exceptionally, some places in this section could be considered as navigable. From White Brook, Smědá keeps always big slope, which is equalled with many high weirs. In its river-bed, wide till 10 m, you will be surprised with stony thresholds and stages. However, before several weirs, there are effected the landings with difficulties. The river flows through open countryside, and enters, only partionally, into forests and meadows. The river bed in Raspenava is wide up to 20 m.
As to tributaries: the right-side river Lomnice is exceptionally navigable at higher water level.
Smědá river is always navigable within a short time-period, owing to missing forests of these part of Jizerské Mountains. It is mostly at snow thaw in spring or after heavy rains. Water register stage of 70 cm on White Brook is to be taken as a minimum for upper ssection, the navigation from Raspenava is possible at 60 cm water register. Attentiuon, under weirs can be dangerous sand-banks! The navigation is – in its upper section – quite difficult, it is necessary to master perfectly the boat in difficult terrains. Anyway, from Raspenava you can drive also with less experienced watermen.
