Ratibořice castle
Castles
Náchod district
The history of castle begins at the end of 14th century, concretly in 1388, when first notices about Vaněk of Žampach stronghold are mentioned. Since 1464, Ratibořice belonged to Ryzmburg dominion. However, Ratibořice stronghold was not inhabited at that time,so it started to be fallen into decay successively, and ceased to exist at the end of 16th century. In 1582, the stronghold was joined to Náchod dominion with Smiřický of Smiřice Parentage. In 1634, Ratibořice became an ownership of Piccolomini Parentage, as Emperor Ferdinand II. made a donation of a dominion to Prince Ottavio Piccolomini. Later, Lawrence Piccolomini let to build here a small castle in Baroque style within 1702-1712, with a target to serve as summer and hunting seat, with chapel and ground-floor lackey wing. The building was constructed according to standard of Italian villas, known as „casino“. In 1792, new owner of dominion was Peter Biron, Duke of Kuronia and Sagan. At the beginning of 19th century, inherited this ownership Catarina Frederika Wilhelmina Benigna, Dukess of Sagan. She liked the castle very much and chose it as her summer seat. Within 1825-1826, the castle was adapted in a spirit of late Classical style. In the outskirts, there was founded free country-park. Dukess let to built here hunting pavillon as well as palm glasshouse. Interiors got new solution and luxurious equipment. In ground-floor, there was established a library, where ther was allowed the entrance to famous Barbora Panklova.
The dukess died in 1839, and successively, George William Duke of Schaumburg-Lippe Parentage bought the dominion in 1842. His Parentage let to arrange into today´s form within 1860-1864. The castle remained in their possession till 1947, when it was carried over the Czechoslovak state.
