Petřín Look Out Tower In Prague
Locality type:
Lookout tower
Place:
Prague capital

The place where Petřín look out tower is situated, is formed with rock sandstone bottom. The name of this  327 metres high hill comes probably from Latin name of „Petra“, i.e. rock. Petřín is, thanks to its easy accessibility, very popular place, and not only of enamoured couples.

Vilém Kurz and Vratislav Pasovský gave an impulse for construction of Petřín look-out-tower, and it happened on occasion of Country Jubilee Exhibition. Officially, the construction was open for public on 20th August 1891, and we can say, that the building is a smaller copy of Eiffel Tower in Paris. The look out tower is 60 meters high, its weight makes 175 tonns. In order to enjoy a marvellous view from the top, you have to mount 299 stages altogether. In 1979, the look out tower was closed. Anyway, since 1991 was open for public again, and within 2000, it undergone complete reconstruction.

Except look ouit tower, you can find in Petřín also observatory. Several projects were presented, and the building was built nearby so called Hunger Wall. The observatory has three cupolas and was open for public in 1928. At present, it is cultural as well as special institute, with own library, containing more than 10000 books. How to get there?
