There are many delightful places in Slovakia which were not discovered by tourists up to now. One of them is to be found not far from Czech border, between the towns of Trenčín and Prievidza, located in forests of Strážov Mountains. So, majestic ruin of Uhrovec castle is hidden just here.

The excursion to the region of Uhrovec castle could be started in the town of Bánovce nad Bebravou, situated on main road from Trenčín to Zvolen. You can arrive here by car or by bus, to 7 kms distant community of Uhrovec, which belongs to Slovak memorable places. The reason is following: Ludovít Štúr, one of father´s of Slovak nation and Slovak language, was born here on 28th October 1815. He became well-known especially with a fact that he kept (maintained) his fatherland and nation literary language established in Central-Slovak dialects, being used till now. Just by chance, Alexander Dubček, leading Slovak and Czechoslovak politician, was born in 1921 in the same house as Ludovít Štúr one hundred years ago. The house is presented in a style of local people´s architecture and serves now as a museum. You can see here comprehensive exposition regarding both famous personalities. Whereas Štúr time-period of 19th century will not be too interesting for visitors now, life-destiny of Dubček will be more attractive, for sure.

During your stay in the community of Uhrovec, you cannot miss Jankov vršek (Janek Hill) with a monument dedicated to fallen heroes from period of Slovak National Revolt. The monument has ground plan of five point star and has a form of gigantic pillar, arising from square base of 15 m height. Monument-circumference is made by mounds with staircases and symbolic partisans´ tombs. On western foot, there is placed an amphitheatre.

Walking passage from Jankov vršok takes 2 hours (or one hour walk from Uhrovske Podhradí) to majestic Uhrovec Castle. Thanks to its remoteness from Middle Age ways (so also far distant from war-expeditions), there was preserved its compact ruin, including very nice samples of mutual mixture of each architecture styles. As far as the buildings are concerned, there is rising especially Romanesque chapel with apside and noble platform as well as monumental palace in Renaissance style surpassing surrounding forests. The castle was constructed in 13th century. Matthias Cak Trenciansky, well-known magnate of that time-period, participated probably on its building. Anyway, Uhrovec Castle noticed its most favourable period within 16th and 17th centuries. Owing to its location, the building activity here could develop undisturbed (far from battle-fields), to nearly Renaissance face. However, this remoteness became fatal at the same time, and shortly afterthat, the castle completely lost the sense of its existence. At present, vast reconstruction of the castle is being made. Direct castle environment is formed with landscape of ranged  limestone hills with steep slopes, rocks and deep valleys. The highest point of the whole massif is Rokos (1010 m). Its overcome could be a must, when visiting Uhrovec region. From top of rocks, there occur views on various directions around. Upstairs, in a meadow, there is placed a monument, dedicated to Štúr and Dubček.

Hill massif is declared as nature reservation, where most interesting parts are oak-copse of all possible forms. How to get Rokos Hill? Follow green marked tourist trail along quite difficult path, passing karst lowland Zrubisko with delightful views through forest on castle silhouette and opposite located slopes covered with rocks. Green marked route is substituted with red mountain range path, with sharp mounting on Rokos massif. Nevertheless, less difficult (regarding terrain and time), there is a descent from the castle towards Uhrovske Podhradi and consequent mounting, following blue marked tourist trail via Bahulova Valley. Even pleasant descent from Rolos leads via Kosut Rock along red and yellow marked tourist trail to small village of Omasina. Here, you can admire last rests of original clay people´s architecture, characteristic for this area.
