SK: Liptovska Kokava – Machy Nature Reserve

Liptovska Kokava is a quiant town spreading below the majestic peaks of the Western Tatras. Today, we visit the invaluable locality of Machy.

The Machy Nature Reserve has been a protected area since 1965 even though the area uner protection is not designated clearly. The reserve covers an area of 25,5 hectares. The reserve area is unique and it preserves pine trees and turf associations in different stages of development.

Right upon entering the reserve you will feel the local climate (cold) which creates unique ecosystem. There are rare and endangered plants such as small cranberry (Oxycoccus palustris), tussock cottongrass (Eriophorum vaginatum), Vaccinium uliginosum, common sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) and many more.

The area is administered by Tatra National Park. Hence you need abide by all the visitor rules and move on designated walkways. This great area offers wild nature, mysterious forests, beautiful green moss carpets with mushroom and ferns dotted with dew pop up from moss. There are also some small lakes around.

An interesting thing about this locality is that the Machy Nature Reserve which is being used for research purposes. A similar one is situated in the region of Orava. Diverse fauna and mysterious atmosphere make this place very photogenic. Also, there is a bike trail nearby.    

So if you intend to leave hustle of a  city behind you, try to visit this quiet and beautiful place in the region of Liptov.
