We return to a small but beautiful town Liptovský Hrádok. In addition to the natural beauty of the confluence of the Váh and Bela, the natural parallel bar Skalka or an exceptional arboretum, it also offers a number of technical, medieval or historical monuments and attractions.
The town of Liptovský Hrádok is situated in the eastern part of the Liptov basin and can be reached by D1, by train (Žilina-Poprad line) or by bus.
You can read about the history of this Liptov town here. Today we invite you to a sightseeing tour, we will not focus on landmarks, such as a medieval castle, which is also a lake with a rock, where the chapel of St. John of Nepomuk. We will also omit the monument to the fallen in the First World War and the approximately 15-minute climb to the limestone cliff Skalka with a monumental double cross. We decided to invite you for a walk to less popular areas.
We will start with a visit to the arboretum of Hrádok, which was created here at the end of the 19th century for the purpose of forestry education. Initially it was a forest botanical park, over time the park became the third dendrologically largest arboretum in Slovakia. Thanks to its location it is the highest arboretum in Central Europe. In addition to European trees, you will also find Asian or North American taxa. The arboretum also includes the Green Heart Little Castle nature trail with information boards, landscaped trails, and the “Three Pillars” memorial - Pravda vítězí ("Truth Wins").
Equally attractive is the Ethnographic and Shepherd Museum in Liptov, which can be found in the building of the Royal Salt Warehouse. During your visit you will see the office of the Comorian Prefect of the Lava-Hradek estate with trophies, works of art, historical furniture and objects that testify to the life of foresters and hunters. You will also see a specialized exhibition of Slovak shepherd culture and sheepfolding.
We also recommend stopping at the Classicist Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the 18th century. Francis of Assisi by prominent Hungarian sculptor Alois Štróbl.
Then, definitely move to Route No. 18 (in the direction of Králova Lehota), which will take you to the slightly more distant Museum of Mining and Metallurgy Masa. The original Baroque buildings of Vaznice and Klopacka with an exposition of the history of mining and metallurgy, miners' clothing and collections of mining lamps and tools await you here. There is also a sample of mined rocks and minerals.
And there are many more interesting places in Liptovský Hrádok and its surroundings, so we will definitely come back here again.
