SK, Bratislava: Medical Garden - A Park In the Middle of the City
Published: 19.12.2021
We invite you for a walk through one of the most popular and most beautiful public parks in Bratislava. It is located in a relatively densely built-up area of the Old Town and is called the Medical Garden, which aptly describes the surrounding presence of a polyclinic, school or dean's office at the Comenius University Faculty of Medicine.

The medical garden is surrounded by vibrant life. There are many shops in the immediate vicinity, there are trams, cars and ambulances within a few tens of meters from the garden of the distant hospital. You will meet a lot of people here, including students discussing out loud. Despite all these facts, after stepping into the park, you will find yourself in a completely different, peaceful world of greenery and beauty.

Medická zahrada (Labutí fontána)

If you enter the Medical Garden from Špitálská Street, the first thing you will see will be the building of the beautiful one-storey Baroque Aspremont Summer Palace, which has stood here since 1771. The palace is decorated in the French period style and includes the Crucifixion Chapel. Since 1920, it has been the seat of the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Medicine.

On the other side of 29. Augusta Street, before entering the garden, the atmosphere will be enhanced by the beautiful historic Ondrejský Cemetery or Polná Street, where there are small town markets and stalls with street delicacies. After walking through the breathtaking wrought iron gate, you will be greeted by a picturesque house where they make excellent coffee and sweet desserts.

Right behind the house there is a playground, an outdoor reading room, a workout training ground, as well as improved public toilets. But the biggest attraction is the greenery itself in the form of majestic tree lines, landscaped lawns or flower beds. The medical garden is open all year round, but during designated hours, so be sure to plan your visit.

In the tangle of sidewalks, you will also find information boards with descriptions of tree species, as well as the monumental Sándor Petöfi Memorial, the incredibly beautiful Swan Fountain, the sitting statue of Martin Kukučín, a bench with "stone" pillows and other works of small architecture.

The park area is also used as a cultural space for various events, from theaters to concerts and creative workshops. But the biggest experience is definitely just such an ordinary walk on a weekday. The Medical Garden is a real oasis of peace that you should not miss when wandering the capital of Slovakia.
