SK, Low Tatras –From Chopok through the Deres and Polana to Vrbicke Lake
Published: 14.11.2013
Those who love nature will sure agree with my following statement – the end of summer and beginning of autumn is the best period for tourism. Everything seems more beautiful and more quite because the tourist season is long gone and the winter season haven’t even began. Nature changed its clothes to more colorful one and you can see animals where you wouldn’t expect them – right on a tourist pathway.

Mountain lodge Kamienka ( 2000 meters above the sea level) , is just few meters below the peak of Chopok ( 2024 meters above the sea level) was a starting point for our pleasant tourist walks and it ended by Vrbicke Lake .

Kamenná chata pod Chopkem mlha se plazila přes hřeben Nízkých Tater

Almost to Stone cottage below Chopok we went from recreation resort Jasna v Demanovska valley we got by three cable ways. Subseqeuntly we got to the peak of Chopok. It would be really sad if we hadn’t got there. Then, in Kamienka cottage, we refreshed ourselves before the journey. They said the weather would get worse in the afternoon. Despite we felt great in the cottage we were there only for a while and then descended.

Nečekané setkání se svišti a kamzíkem

From Kamenna cottage we went across red tourist trail to the Derese . It had to take us more than half an hour, but because nature showed us beautiful scenery on this easy ridge trail we spent there more than two hours. Sun rays got through thick clouds and beautifully lit surrounding nature. This was changing with thick fog that seemed to crawl across the Low Tatras . It was magical but the best was only about to come. Only few meters from stone tourist pathway we saw a marmot. He was observing us for a while already. He sat on a rocks and starred at us. At first we stood still and observed him too. We were afraid to move even a bit to not scare him. When we considered him to got used to us we took our camera and started taking pictures of him. But he didn’t like it because when we got closer he whistled and then ran away. But he focused our attention to a group of other marmots playing on a meadow. So now we watched them for a while. However, another fog wave and rain drops interrupted our observing. On our way to the Deres we encountered a chamois. But we didn’t manage to make a photo of him for he was embraced by a thick fog.

Přes Dereše na Poľanu

A nice walk on a ridge along the red trail took us over the rockiest part of the main ridge in the Low Tatras - the Deres ( 2004 meters above the sea level ) , it runs west from Chopok until Polana. Even though it was not our plan to walk off the red trail at Polana saddle and continue along the yellow we just got on the peak of Polana ( 1890 meters above the sea level). For a while, at least. There we had a small break, ate apples, crackers, rest for a while and got back to the saddle.

From Polana saddle across Tri Vody to Vrbicke Lake

From Polana saddle we walked along yellow tourist trail downhill. Sky was cloudy and it was foggy. We had to mind every our step since rocks on tourist trail were slippery and many of them were loose. But before we reached a crossroad with signs pointing to Tri Vody ( 1370 meters above the sea level) weather got better. There was just one part of the road that ran again along the yellow tourist trail. We were supposed to reach Vrbicke Lake within an hour. This part of the trail was really difficult. On significant part of the trail water ran right on the trail. Since we did not want to get our shoes wet we walked really slowly. The biggest problem was to cross a creek. We had to find a part where water flows more slowly and where are some rocks above the water surface. It took a while but we found it. I had to admit I was pretty afraid to cross it but then there was only a nice forest trail. The yellow tourist mark showed the way right to Vrbicke Lake , the largest natural lake in the Low Tatras.

Vrbické pleso

Map says this trek should take about three and half hours. Due to weather, and I don’t mean rain by it, even a beautiful scenery with fog. We have watched this from the ridge. Also due to an encounter with a marmots and chamoises our trek took us almost six hours. To be honest, this was one of the best trips of this year.
