River description:
This river sources in Slovak Ore Mountains in south direction from Dobšinská Ice Cave in an altitude of 1272 metres above sea level. At first, the river flows in east direction, at the mouth of Dobšinský brook, it turns to the south, and this direction is kept just to the community of Lenartovce, where it leaves Slovak territory. The river basin surface in Slovakia makes 3192 square kilometres, flow length makes 221 kms, navigable section in Slovakia is 75 kms long. However, regulation of its lower flow, the navigation is made quite short. On its upper flow, from mouth of Dobšinský brook, the river has narrow, stony river bed, with quick stream and rapids. The obstacles are made - on several places - from fallen trees. Below the town of Rožňava, the river flows through wider bed, in Slovak Karst Valley. After passing the town of Plešivec, the hills step back, and after the town of Safarikovo, the river has just plain character, included regulated river bed. On the river, there are to be found many rapids, the older are mostly damaged and those modern are quite difficult to be carried over. The purity of water is becoming worse, anyway, quite expressive river pollution is to be noted from paper-factory in Plešivec.
