River description:

The river sources in south-west direction from the community of Vikartovce in eastern part of Low Tatra Mountains. At first, it flows in north-east direction, after passing the community of Hrabušice, it turns in southeast direction, passes throughout canyons of Slovak Paradise, and during its way through Hornad basin, the river definitely changes its direction to the south, at the community of Kysak. The length of navigable flow makes 145 kms.

However, water levels on Hornad are not too favourable in the course of the year. The upper section (Upper Prielom) requires water level register index min. 60 cm (below bridge in Hrabušice). For middle flow section, there is required minimal water level register index 55 cm, or 160 cm at Spišske Vlachy water register index. As far as the low section (below Ružín) is concerned, this section is navigable all year round without problems. Each year, at the beginning of October, there is taken place here Košice Watermen Marathon.
