Austria, Carinthia – Skiing in the town of Kötschach-Mauthen

Published: 25.1.2023
At the end of the year, we managed to visit Kötschach-Mauthen, a picturesque mountain town in the district of Hermagor. What we loved about this place, and what it offers its visitors is the content of this very article!

The region of Carinthia, in southern Austria. The capital is Klagenfurt. The border line with Italy and Slovenia creates the Alps. No wonder that the whole of Carinthia is an ideal place for a summer vacation. There is beautiful nature, lakes, and mountains. It is also a great place for winter vacation due to the fact that there are several thousand kilometers of ski slopes. Lovers of winter sports can really enjoy themselves on the slopes, and this applies even for the summer season. There are some locations suitable for skiing at 3000 meters. Skiers and snowboarders can use them any time in the year.

This time, we didn’t pay our visit to some of the large ski resorts. We did rather the opposite. We went to the picturesque alpine village of Kötschach-Mauthen, 450 km away from Bratislava. Even in the height of the season, the village seems peaceful and silent.

Despite we were not the only ones here to celebrate the end of the year, we hadn’t seen any crowds in the village. There were even no noisy parties of young adults, and we hadn’t seen any groups of people standing before pubs. It was pleasant surprise as we had some small children with us. We managed the 6-hour ride pretty well, and had booked accommodation beforehand. More than half of the route is a high quality freeway.

Skiing for everybody
Even though the main goal of our short vacation was to rest and spend our time with friends we otherwise don’t meet often throughout the year, it would be a sin not to take snowboard and skis with us. There is the small and nice ski resort of Vorhegg/Kötschach - Mauthen right in the village.
lyžařské středisko Vorhegg / Kötschach – Mauthen
Since we stayed very close to it, it wasn’t necessary to get there by car. Our “drivers” really appreciated it. It was an advantage even for the kids, because it wasn’t a problem to quickly get back to our apartment for a cup of hot coco or tea.

At the first glance, it would seem one cable lift and three ski tows for 6 km of slopes is not a lot. These couldn’t satisfy demanding skier. But the opposite is true. There were some good skiers with us in our group, and they really enjoyed this “hillbilly” skiing; even though the slopes were rather for mediocre or beginning skiers.

One of the greatest advantages is Vorhegg/Kötschach – Mauthen resort, located at 700-1400 meters, offers great skiing without lines even in the height of the winter season.
Aquarena
Another great advantage of this town is that Aquarena is located below the slop. In summer, people can use outside toboggan, or you can swim in roofed pool in winter. Taking a sauna after a full day of skiing is really a good option. However, you have to find out what days it is open, the public can visit Aquarena only on some days (except holidays in Austria when this place is opened daily).

It is also a time of winter holidays in the mountains, meeting with friends over a glass of mulled wine or it is a time of a great cabbage soup, which will warm you up in this season.
