Austria: Dachstein – Mountain Range in the Northern Limestone Alps

Published: 21.1.2015
Austria is a typical mountain country mostly consisting of the Eastern Alps. Austrian Alpine terrain is typical for vast mountain ranges divided by deep valleys and mountains steeply declining to valleys.

One such locality Dachstein, the limestone mountain massive. It is a popular destination visited not only with tourists but with fans of winter sports as well.

Dachstein Mountains is about 50 kilometers away from Salzburg. It spans to the republics of Styria, the region of Salzburg and a Upper Austria. This mountain range is part of the Northern limestone Alps. They stretch to the east and north east and end near Wien. The Dachstein mountains covers an area of 900 km² and consists of groups of mountains or isolated massifs - Dachstein, Sarstein, Gosaukamm and Grimming. The mountain range was created by the Dachstain limestone in the Triassic. There are many karsts such as several caves. The largest of them are Mammuthöhle a ndKoppenbrüllerhöhle. Visitors’ favorite is Rieseneishöhle ice cave. The importance and uniqueness of the Dachstein region stays also on the occurrence of several glaciers. They are the northernmost and, at the same time, the easternmost glaciers in the Alps.

Dachstein - noble giant

The highest mountain of the group is the main central massif of Dachstein. It is a mountain easy to notice .

Hunerkogel – panoramic views, attraction, glacier

You can get by a cableway to the top station of Hunerkogel (2 700 m). There are all social facilities including a restaurant. This place has to offer fabulous and unique panoramic views over the landscape. It is thanks to terraced platforms and the 81 meters long bridge that connects two rocks. Except for views of steep south side of Dachstein, and a deep valley below, there is a chance to see an inhospitable plateau Am Stein (1 720 m) to the northeast. However, there is also another tourist attraction - the complex of the Ice Palace. It is carved right to the glacier. You can see many beautifully lit ice statues in its labyrinth of tunnels and corridors. This makes the exhibition somewhat mysterious and interesting. Nevertheless, Dachstein offers colorful palette of sport activities, including skiing and snowboarding. A ski resort is situated at the glacier which covers the area around the peak of this limestone massif. A couple of mountain-climbing trails, and via ferratas are to be found in Dachstein’s diverse terain.

Dachstein is a place which enjoy lovers of winter sports , skialpinists and mountaineers as well as turisté and photographers. As it is accessible by a cableway, the massif can be visited by less-abled tourists, or by families with children, and seniors. It is an enchanting gigantic massif. Its impressive scale will leave every visitor with deep impressions. Impressive yet bizarre and proud. This is Dachstein, reaching to the sky.

The northwest of Dachsteinu is characteristic for raising slightly. There are also glaciers. You can’t get to the top no other way than going on your own (there are no cable cars). The western part of Dachstein has only one large mountain cabin Adamek Hütte (2 196 m n. m.), ke které se nejlépe dostanete od Gosausee (10 minutes by car from Gosau village). I tis a beautiful lake great for taking a swim shielded by two thousand meters high mountains in the south.

Der Johann is the king of all Dachstein ferratas (klettersteig). This is thanks to its location, difficulty and the lenght. It easy to access. Red dots mark it all the way. I tis recommended to park your car at the bottom station of the Dachstein Südwandbahn cable car. Once there, set off to the righ along the cables in the direction upwards to Südwand Hütte. You get under the cables when the trail swerves westards. In 40 minutes of walk you get to beautiful stone paved trail. However, you just go around it. By following the directions you will move in the northwest direction and there you board the klettersteig after an hour of walk.
