Austria, Saalbach Hinterglemm – Summer in the Mountains
This paradise here is suitable for both hikers and mountain bikers (MTB), with whom Saalbach is literally overwhelmed in the summer season. From Prague, you can easily get here by car in about 6 hours, in Salzburg there is also an airport and there are direct buses. In 1991, the Alpine Skiing World Championships took place here.
Saalbach Hinterglemm is located in the Pinzgau region and is part of the Kitzbühel Alps. The highest point is 2,044 meters high Spielberghorn, located in the north, in the south then Hochkogel at an altitude of 2,249 meters above sea level.
The village lives mainly from tourism, so there are countless accommodation options. Most of them also include the so-called Joker Card, which allows you to use the local cable cars free of charge. This is advantageous mainly for downhill mountain biking, where the cable car is needed several times a day and separately purchased rides would be really expensive. However, even for classic hiking, it is great to own this card. In the morning, all you have to do is go to one of the local mountains, go hiking on the ridges and in the evening use the cable car back and avoid a long step down.
Today we will go to the Schattberg mountain, which lies at an altitude of 2018 m above sea level. We will be taken by the Schattberg X-press cable car, which is right in the center of Saalbach. Below it is a parking lot. At the top is a pleasant rest area, a modern playground and there is also a downhill mountain bike trail and the Seven Summits trail, which is 24 kilometers long and overcomes 7 peaks. There is also the opportunity to try paragliding.
However, we set off on foot along the ridge via Bergstation - Skyrest, where there is also a cable car and the possibility of refreshments. Another downhill route begins here, as well as the ascent to the first of the peaks of the Seven Summits - Mount Stemmerkogel. A large cross rises on the mountain, which can be seen from a distance. Along the way we meet the remnants of snow and a herd of cows. From here you can take the next route from here to Hinterglemm. However, we use the cable car again to look at the opposite hills.
Now we get on the Reiterkogelbahn cable car and head to its destination station, which lies at an altitude of 1480 meters above sea level. From here, several trips are offered again. Today we are a bit pressed by time, so we set off at least along the shorter Alpenblumenweg. On this trail there are 80 species of beautiful blooming alpine flowers and medicinal herbs, as its name suggests. Then there are two routes for cyclists (blue-line and pro-line freeride trails) and then one forest and two adventure routes.
Holidays in Saalbach are suitable for both families with children and athletes.
