Croatia: Baška Summer Resort On the Island of Krk

Published: 30.6.2019
Everyone of us imagines something different when thinking about an ideal vacation. Someone likes to lie on a beach; some breaks his limits when climbing on mountains, or throws away his responsibility and goes to wild parties. For me it is a combination of everything mentioned above – from beaches, through crazy sports, to exploration of beauties of nature and tasting local cuisine.

I have never enjoyed exploration of the sea. After few minutes I am bored. Neither sunbathing, reading a book in shadows of trees I liked for more then few hours. Luckily my husband and me are considering this the same. A week on a beach isn’t a true relaxation. This shapes our vacation – we explore the surroundings, try every possible or impossible water sport, walk through local towns and visit wonders of nature or some cultural sights. Usually I am not tanned even after ten days of vacation. When cohorts of holidaymaker change I look like I just arrived. Well, at least my husband Mark is tanned and his skin reminds me of nice moments of our summer vacation and it does even today when snowflakes are falling on the other side of window.

Letovisko Baška na ostrově Krk

We planned this vacation in an entirely different fashion. We decided that in 10 days we will visit three countries: - Croatia, Slovenia and on our way back home we will stop by in Austria. We didn’t have any particular plan of our route, because we decided to move off in a moment, as they say. We packed our stuff, took a tent, spirit stove and some food, because we didn’t know if we hadn’t spent some nights in camp. And we did. We hit the road after midnight from Prague and on early morning we enjoyed a fresh sea air on a beautiful pebble beach in Croatia. Our first shelter was in well-equipped camp in Baška summer resort on the island of Krk. This time we enjoyed sunbathing by the sea, since we knew that rest of our days there would devoted to tourism and exploring of surrounding nature and cultural sights. We anticipated we wouldn’t lie under the sun and read books until the end of our vacation

We decided we would spent first three days in a well-known Croatian summer resort Baška, which is thanks to its architecture one of the most beautiful places for vacation in the region of the Adriatic Sea. It is located in southeastern part of the island of Krk, in the Bay of Baška. Beautiful streets, houses built tightly one next to  another Chorvatská Baška na ostrově Krk, mountains growing from sea surface, fresh sea air… This and more waited for us in Baška. Few times we walk through a four-kilometer promenade along the sea is lined with restaurants, inns and stands with souvenirs. However, the most attractive for us remained crystal clear sea and a beautiful long beach covered with fine-grained gravel stone. Eventually, three days happened to be four. In the evening of the fourth we wanted to move somewhere to Slovenia, however during a lunchtime heavy rain started. It was impossible to pack our tent and move off somewhere else. Well, we didn’t mind. Summer storm has magic of its own. I had read a thrilling book until I finished it. We had our supper in a nearby inn and few “shots” with local fishermen secured thunder wouldn’t disturb our sleep.

Poloprázdný kemp
In the morning, when we got out of our sleeping bags, it seemed we are in an entirely different camp. Yesterday there were lots of tents around us. Today there was none. Only camper trailers remained. In the evening we saw few people hop to their cars, however they didn’t pack their tents. They just put tents to containers. A half-empty camp was a surprise for us. Maybe many packed their stuff early in the morning. It was a huge storm last night. Luckily, our tent was unharmed and even water didn’t get inside despite the high intensity of the storm. We were happy we didn’t raise the tent on a place one meter aside, since there emerged a large pool. We set out to the nearest bakery to get some fresh donuts for breakfast and some French bread for our following journey. The wind pleasantly blew and it didn’t take long and our tent was completely dry. During the storm we found on the Internet some beautiful places in Slovenia we would like to visit in the following days. We quickly threw our stuff to the car and before the clock striked noon we hit the road to our next stop – the town of Postojna.
