CZ: Michalovice – A Walk Up Michalovicka Putna
Ideally park your car on the edge of the Radouč nature reserve in Mladá Boleslav. There are several free car parks and the place is sure to be easily found. Radouč National Natural Monument is interesting for its unique fauna and flora. The park on the sandstone floor is really probably the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic. It is home to an incredible number of rabbits and has found a home to its protected ground squirrel in its steppe areas. He is so prosperous here that he is literally overpopulated and has become the mascot of the city. Lots of visitors come here to observe ground squirrels, cute animals are a really great attraction here. There are so many that you don't have to worry about not meeting them. However, the fame of the local ground squirrels also carries certain pitfalls. Most visitors completely ignore the large "DO NOT FEED GROUND SQUIRRELS" signs. Sadly, these are mainly families with children and kindergartens.
Radouč is full of various trails and paths, the walk itself is very nice. In the center of the park there is also a nice playground and on the edge there is a view of the destination of our today's walk - Michalovická putna. But before we get there, we must first descend the wooden path to the river Jizera. Michalovická putna is located on the opposite hill. But that doesn't hurt at all. The village of Podlázky is located in the valley and there is also a grassy sandy beach by the river Jizera, where you can refresh yourself. Throughout the summer, people come here to swim, there are also small snacks, children's climbing frames and a freely accessible beach volleyball court.
Most of the way to Michalovická putna leads along the Jizera through a gardening colony to the village of Michalovice and is well marked. The ruins of Michalovice Castle are today a cultural monument and various events take place here. During the summer season, it is usually open to visitors for a small fee from 10 am to 4 pm in the evening. There is also a small snack at the cash register. The original castle was built in the middle of the 13th century by the Markvartice family. It was later owned by the lords of Michalovice. After the extinction of the family, the castle was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair. Today, there is a nice view of both the village of Podlázky and the more distant statutory town of Mladá Boleslav. You can also climb the preserved iconic putna tower.
If you don't want to go back to the swimming pool in Jizera, you can go to Mladá Boleslav. The famous Czech carmaker Škoda Auto has a beautiful modern museum here. However, those who do not have enough history can visit, for example, the Mladá Boleslav castle, the origin of which is also associated with the Markvartice family.
