CZ, Podyjí National Park: A Trip to Wonderful Nature and Excellent Wine – VIDEO

Published: 3.12.2019
Not far from Znojmo (right on the Czech-Austrian border) we find our smallest national park. Unique nature has been preserved in the Dyje canyon. Let's go to the park at a time when nature is slowly falling asleep and when the first wine cellars are opening their first young wines.

The last golden leaves are on the trees, but most of them are completely bare. On the border above the valley just ripens arrows and nature smells beautiful. In the morning, steam rises from the mouth but gradually warms up. Fortunately, South Moravia is one of the warmest areas in our country.

NP Podyjí was founded in 1991, less than ten years later, on the Austrian side, it was directly followed by Thayatal National Park. The park is mainly protected by the unique Dyje River Valley, where nobody lives for almost 42 kilometers. The valley is one of the best preserved in our country.

The local rocks, large rocky and boulder seas, rock amphitheatres and precipice walls are also unique. Everything is connected with typical and very rich fauna and flora. In the park you can meet black stork, hoopoe, eagle owl, ground squirrel, otter and many rare beetles and butterflies. You have a chance to see a praying mantis, stag beetle or rhinoceros beetle.

The park offers great opportunities for hiking, with an overview for several days. Several trails can be used by cyclists, but a large part is intended for pedestrians only.
In the deciduous forests they leave the fallen trunks to lie freely, and as they grow rapidly with rich green mosses and lichens, they now form a beautiful spectacle in contrast to the fallen leaves. Some rocky paths on the slopes between sharp rocks, stony seas and the Dyje seem more of a fantasy.

Later we gradually rise back from the river and the forest is alternated by dry sunny steppes. Over time, people transformed the original oak forests into pastures, where a unique heath. To preserve them, however, grazing is essential, so you will find domestic animals in the national park.
A large part of the park is surrounded by Moravian and Austrian vineyards and picturesque villages. We also finish the trip in one of the wineries.

I have overlooked Podyjí National Park for a long time because of poor accessibility. But I certainly recommend you to hesitate, the whole region is really beautiful. You can also join the visit with Znojmo or Vranov nad Dyjí.

When the Creator was giving he was particularly generous to the south Moravians. Thus, they could call their land the “land of wine.” He gave them the most sun in the Czech lands as well as warm climate doing good to grapes but bolstering recreational activities as well – for instance at Vranovska dam, Brnenska dam or on the lakes near Palava. So what waits here for visitors? Great Moravian landmarks, castles, chateaus, sacral buildings, great works of engineering, border fortresses, and beautiful places in nature. CZ: Jaromerice nad Rokytnou – A Versailles in Moravia
Published: 7.9.2017
Famous Versailles in France was example for many other residencies of nobility. The chateau in Jaromerice, dubbed Moravian Versailles, was, aparently, also built with French Versailles in mind. It is no false advertising to bring more tourists to this gem of the Baroque era. Jan Adam of Questenberk really wished to build his own Versailles in Jaromerice. This town was supposed to become cultural center in the region as well as home to culture and muses. Plans were grandiose yet lack of funding allowed only partial fulfilment of Jan Adam's dream. Even though, the chateau really became center of culture and it has remained venue of many important culture events ever since.
