Lower Austria: Fabulous Advent and Exceptional Christmas Market
In a vast valley around Vienna more than 300 Christmas markets take places this year at shopping alleys, chateau parks, or monastery gardens. Other markets are in wine cellars, smitheries, or gorges. You will learn about traditions that are at home in this region.
Experience advent wrapped in historical atmosphere at the castles of Lower Austria as well as at its monasteries and chateaus. Visitors are enchanted by these every year. We recommend to visit Grafenegg chateau. Apart from having an opportunity to take part in a guided tour, you will pass by themed stalls selling delicacies or handicrafts (December 5 – 8). Another, similar market will take place in the Christmas village at Schloss Hof (every weekend until the 20th of December 2015). The Benedictine cloister of Göttweig will host another event of fabulous atmosphere (November 28 to December 8 2015) or Seitenstetten cloister (December 11 –13 2015). At Schallaburg, everything will be about jewelry, ceramics, and woodcarving. Here can the visitors try to make their own candles or weave baskets to make Christmas gifts of their own making (December 11 - 13). Another market is going to happen Gaming, a Carthusian Order cloister near Göstling-Hochkar / Lackenhof-Ötscher ski resort (November 28 to December 8). At the Christmas market at Rosenburg chateau is going to be another fabulous winter experience (November 28 to 29 2015, December 5 –8 2015). Of course, we could go on and on in naming other markets...
However, today we invite you to some nontraditional places where Christmas markets can take place. Well, would you expects such an event to take place in, for instance, a gorge, or on the street lined by wine cellars. Or at a vineyard for that matter? It might seem unbelievable yet Christmas markets are going to take place even at such places which will give them special atmopshere.
In Hadres, the longest wine cellar street in Europe, Christmas markets take place during the second and the third weekend of advent. Picturesque Wolkersdorf village opens its wine cellars where also all kinds of delicious meals are served and Christmas gifts are sold. This all happens in the first week of advent. Retz town also offers a beautiful advent events in a wine cellar.
Blacksmith Christmas in Ybbsiz (November 19 to 20 2015) is going to be another interesting experience for you. During this traditional event, the world tiniest pliers will be displayed, or a thimble-sized anvil as well. Both things are also to be found in the Guinness World Records book.
Johannesbachklamm gorge near Würflach is another place worth a visit. The biggest Christmas tree in Austria is beautifully floodlighted here (December 5 to 8 2015). Huge presents or huge ski are laid on a larger-than-life table.
In case you enjoy Christmas and beautiful lights you might like Kittenberger gardens that are going to change to a Christmas tale landscape. Extraordinary light and sound how which includes more than 200 000 Christmas lights is going to happen at every sundown (until December 20 2015).
The time before Christmas is mostly about hustle around buying gifts. Therefore, we believe you should slow down by paying a visit to Lower Austria. There, every town will introduce you true Christmas mood and inspire you perhaps to do something nice.
