Lower Austria: Unforgettable Winter Experiences

Published: 18.12.2019
Lower Austria offers 24 ski resorts with more than 200 kilometers of slopes, serving almost 100 cable cars and lifts. The slopes are mostly mild and wide, so they appeal to families and beginners.

Adrenaline lovers will also be pleased in the nine adventure ski centers. Cross-country skiers will appreciate more than 800 km of groomed trails. The Lower Austrian region is very attractive for day, weekend and longer holidays thanks to the varied snow experiences. This winter season brings several innovations.

For Morning Birds – Guga Hö

"Guga hö" comes from the Mostviertel dialect and means not only "fresh as a fish", but it is also the name for the adventure offer of ski resorts in the Mostviertel region. Skiers who like early morning skiing will have an unforgettable experience on selected dates. At sunrise you will enjoy the first downhill on the pristine slope. With a ski guide, you will get to know the most beautiful places on the hill and then strengthen yourself in the mountain hut with hearty snacks from regional specialties.

If you think skiing early in the morning is only for adults, you are wrong. The Annaberg family ski area for families offers two special dates where even small participants can explore and thoroughly test the rich possibilities of the ski resort. Children between the ages of 8 and 15 who already manage the red slopes can take part in the morning skiing in Annaberg accompanied by an adult on 8 February and 21 March 2020.

In Anna-Park you can enjoy small and big. There are two freestyle sections that offer winter action and fun in one. At the “Family” theme park, you can practice your first attempts on various obstacles and jumps. The “FunCross” section awaits you with sharp corners, snow waves, 800 m long jumps and two different tracks for beginners and advanced skiers.

Main Skiing Resorts in Lower Austria

Hochkar is the largest resort in Lower Austria, which has 19 kilometers of slopes and offers experiences on the slopes and in the open terrain. At 1,800 meters above sea level with excellent snow conditions and an annual snow guarantee, both beginners and seasoned skiers will enjoy a great ride.

Lackenhof impresses with its location right at the foot of the Ötscher mountain and with plenty of accommodation right next to the ski slope. This East-Alpine resort with excellent snow conditions offers slopes of all levels of difficulty, even a racing track.

Gemeindealpe resort can surprise its visitors at every step, from the top to the valley. If someone is looking for adventure, here comes into its own. With its 15.5 km slopes and 4 ski lifts, the resort has a lot to offer not only for families but also for freeriders, snowboarders and non-skiers. There are cross-country ski runs with a length of 11.5 km, ice skating and curling on the village square and snowy winter hiking around Lake Erlaufstausee. You can even change your active movement for a moment for a comfortable and romantic ride in a horse-drawn carriage across the winter landscape.

Those who cannot get enough of skiing, snowboarding and sledding are right at the Zauberberg Semmering. Cross-country skiing continues even after 6 pm, when artificial light comes on every day, illuminating not only the ski slopes but also the surrounding winter landscape.

To the south of Vienna you will find ski centers that provide conditions suitable for small skiers and adults who prefer larger and more demanding slopes. For example, Mönichkirchen-Mariensee, Family Ski Arena St. Corona or Puchberg am Schneeberg.
