SK, High Tatras: Cottage Beneath Solisko
There are many cottages hiding in the High Tatras. Together we will explore its youngest cottage that for decades guards Štrbské pleso and surrounding mountains.
It is Cottage Beneath Solisko that is located under Přední Solisko Peak (2117 meters above the sea level) and is whole year open. The best route goes from Štrbské pleso by a cableway or via a blue tourist pathway but, of course, there are many other tourist tracks. We recommend you a walk from Tři studánky or bit harder walk across Mlynická valley across Bystré sedlo to Furkotská valley, Cottage Beneath Solisko is only few meters from there. The first route is easy even for children but the other routes require better shape.
Its perfect location at Přední Solisko Peak above popular Štrbské pleso was an incentive for a construction of a cottage. This was supported also by local climate spas or sports events such as sledge races sand skiing competitions. The most important races happened in 1935 (FIS). We must keep in mind nearby ski jump. All these factors – location, and large numbers of tourists visiting this place – were a reason for a construction of Přední Soliskoa ski slope with a ski tow in 1943. The bottom ski tow stations were located by Štrbské pleso and the upper station five hundred meters higher. Interesting fact is that the upper station consisted partially of a dome of a former observatory. The ski tow operated until the year 1969 and later it was replaced by a chairlift and since 2002 the Tatras it was replaced again, this time by a four-chairlift.
An observatory dome was only a temporary solution, soon the foundations of a new cottage were laid to improve standard for customers. Partial operation was launched in 1944 and in 1946 it was finished. Construction material was transported here via a cableway. From the beginning it was used only by skiers and the opening hours were adjusted to their needs. Gradually tourists began to use this. The first cottager here was František Bujak, a ski instructor. In the 1960s, there was even an intention to demolish the cottage since it was not profitable. Alpine club JAMES prevented this. The cottage offered a recreation and refreshments. There was also available accommodation but it was not that popular. In the beginning of the 1990s, it was abolished.
In 1995, the cottage was transformed to private property, hostel services were resumed and an extensive renovation was started in 2003. The cottage was interesting for the fact that a new one surrounded the former construction and then the old one was deconstructed. The renovation was finished after mere 4 months. Since 2002 the cottager Milan Štefánik has been administering the cottage merited for a better standard of the cottage.
The cottage has 11 beds in two rooms and a large dinning room where visitors can choose from a wide variety of meals. Supplies and water get here by a cableway. The cottage has relatively wide terrace from where you can have a beautiful view over Štrbské pleso and surrounding Tatras. Since 2009, the Bivak Club was renewed and today it operates a restaurant.
Cottage Beneath Solisko offers its visitors a combination of a pleasant stay with a cup of real tatratea (tatranský čaj) and views over subtatranian lands. Or you can just rest there during your sports vacation.
