SK, Orava Region: Weekend Full of Experiences
The ski season is on and this year’s winter is not only rich on snow but also many beautiful sunny days. So as soon as we had a free weekend we moved off to nature at least for few days. Our steps led to Orava, one of the most beautiful regions in Slovakia.
We packed our things already on Thursday evening so we would be ready to go before traffic jams on roads out of Bratislava. We enjoyed our journey on the D1 highway to Žilina. Despite the fact it was little snowing a road after we got off the highway was well-maintained (not usual for Slovakia) and we found ourselves in the town of Zuberec in Podroháčská koliba.
Skiing at Zuberec
Due to the fact we had no booked accommodation our steps led first to an Infocenter. Despite the season is at its peak you can easily find accommodation in Zuberec and so we found a cozy and affordable room. Since we had already eaten in a shepherd’s hut we were ready to change our clothes and impatiently wait at the bottom of a ski slope few minutes before night skiing begin. We drank a glass of mulled wine in a snack bar by a ski tow. Right after maintenance of a ski slope a ski tow launched use it to get us up. Right in Zuberec there are two ski resorts (Janovky and Milotín). Both offer both day as well as evening skiing. The slopes at Zuberec are not steep so they are suitable mostly for families with kids and weekend skiers. Snowboarders also like local slopes. We had splendid ride there, there were only few people and there were almost no queues at the ski tow. In the night we were so tired we just fell to bed and fell asleep right away.
Ski hiking to an open folk museum
In the morning we a sun woke us with its rays that were shining through a curtain. It was beautiful outside. We lend cross-country skis from our friends and moved off to our first ever ski-country journey after our breakfast. Zuberec, surroundings and the whole region of Orava is just cross-country ski paradise. In fact, this sport that combines active relax with enjoying beautiful nature much more difficult than it seems. As our goal we picked the Museum of Orava Village Zuberec - Brestová , that is situated not far from the town. The road took us more time than we planned and we were not as skilled as we had thought of ourselves before we moved off, cross-country skiing was obviously not in our blood. Eventually, we reached our goal, tied, sweaty but happy that we did it. I recommend to all enthusiastic beginners to choose shorter route for their first time. In a shepherd’s hut in front of the Museum of Orava Village we had a great lunch, we had a rest for a while and then we enjoyed a walk in snowy open-folk museum. Houses hidden under snow looked like in fairytale. Because I forgot to pack my camera in the morning, I will show you at least some summer photos of this interesting museum. We almost barely managed to crawl back to our room. It was a long time since we were so exhausted. Quick supper, hot bath and finally deserved sleep. A sun woke us again. The weather was great.
From a slope right into a p
We rather didn’t even looked at cross-country skis that day. We threw our snowboards to our car after the breakfast and we packed also swimsuits and set out to Zverovka. Our journey was longer thanks to a “skillful” Pole". Apparently he didn’t realize a road is covered with road salting however, there was minus temperature outside so a layer of snow could froze on a road. Right behind the village we had to call for help for him. He didn’t make it through a curve and he ended in a snowdrift and was unable to get from there by himself. Our help to him was also without any positive result. Luckily, we had a number on our landlady,, her husband came there right away by his tractor to help. It is true what they say about big hearts of Oravian people. You don’t see such helpfulness so often.
We enjoyed riding on snowboard at Zverovka – Spálená really very much. Well-maintained ski slopes are completed with four-seats cableway, good meals at a buffet and clean social facilities. This proved that even in Slovakia you can have great skiing experience. Winter sports are becoming more and more popular and during winter season to our pleasure there are many large competitions in skiing, skating or cross-country skiing. If you would like to make some bets you can visit bwin website where the most popular are bwin odds in hockey . You can find there more than thirty thousand bets daily! Except for skiers and snowboarders many alpine mountaineers enjoyed the beauty and peace of the West Tatra Mountains . Once I thought we had to try this sport however, when I consider how cross-country skiing exhausted me, I think I have to get some endurance first.
After a whole-day fun, we moved by our car to close relax resort Oravice. It is known not only for its thermal spring, but also its aqua park and close ski resort. In winter one can easily move from a ski slope to a pool. Relaxing in warm water was splendid not only for our exhausted body but also soul. After we had heated in the pool we had a roll in snow. It was an amazing experience for me. Even this day in Orava we enjoyed. In the evening, a long road home was ahead, however, I slept it through. Weekend relax in Orava was simply amazing.

Although winter for us this year is very generous in terms of snow, completely free of snow, we're just left. Although not all ski resorts have sufficient snowy, winter sports enthusiasts will certainly come into their own, mainly thanks to artificial snow.
Do you belong among winter sports lovers? Also, you can not imagine a winter holiday without a good snow and well-maintained slopes? Although, I have to admit that in recent years we go with a group on skiing for one week. Usually, we go abroad, but the Slovak mountains, we did not forgot about. My favorite places have been for years the Kysuce and Orava regions.

On the shore of the Orava dam a district town of Namestovo is located. I ti surrounded by beautiful hills of Oravska Magura and Podbeskydska Highlands. I am really getting into mountain biking. There was a time I couldn’t even imagine that I would ride across mountain ridges. Even getting across it on foot was difficult.
