Slovenia: Predjama Castle (Predjamski grad)

Published: 16.1.2013
Slovenian Predjama Castle is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating castles in the world. It is hidden in a town of the same name, which is only 10 kilometers away from Postojna, a popular tourist town known for its unique cave system.

In the Czech Republic and in Slovakia we are used to see castles standing on high peaks of steep rocks. Predjama Castle , however, looks like it is ingrowth in the rock. The name of the castle says something about its characteristics, since it means, “a castle built in front of a cave”. Predjama Castle was built under an overhang of 123 meters high rock. An inattentive tourist’s eye can easily miss it. A very interesting and unusual castle has four floors. It consists of two segments: external that is located in front of the cave, and internal that is hidden in the cave and under an overhang of rock. About 13 kilometers are discovered within the vast cave made by the Lokva River. Today there is a museum in the castle that we recommend to visit, despite a high tickets cost. The truth is that you will see here a lot less of historic furnishing than you can see in middle-European castles. However, partially it is because before a reconstruction of the castle somebody took a great amount of furnishings through an escape corridor. Still, the castle didn’t loose anything from its beauty and mysticism. Moreover, it is a wonderful piece of architecture.

Prices of tickets you may find HERE

If you travel to these parts of Slovenia, we think you would like to see also a beautiful Postojna Cave so it would be a good deal if you buy a ticket package that contains entrance to both sights, you may find further information HERE.

Except for the castle itself visitors will be amazed also by vast caves that are part of it. Original castle underwent many reconstructions and it is obvious that many architectonic styles influenced castle’s look. Today the castle is one of the biggest attractions in Slovenia. A visitor can decide if he/she wants to wait for a guided tour, or will have a tour on his/her own. Information leaflets are except the English, German, Italian, and Slovenian languages also in Czech. If you go here in summer you may have a chance to see one of many supporting programs that take place open air. Among the most popular are knight fights or historical performances.
