USA, Alaska: Juneau – To Glaciers
For example, less than 20 kilometers from the city, you will encounter epic natural scenery. We are mainly talking about Nugget Falls, which open into the lake at the Mendenhall Glacier. The glacier itself is about 20 kilometers long and connects to the much more massive Junean glacier field, which covers more than 2,000 square kilometers and stretches to British Columbia. The best place to start visiting the area is the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, located on the shores of the lake.
Inside the visitor center, it is possible to watch a 20-minute documentary about the area or listen to a short lecture by one of the rangers. The local bookstore often hosts various events for children. In addition, there are hiking trails around the lake - from the easy to moderately difficult. You can also look forward to mountain goats, bears, beavers or salmon.
Southeast of Juneau you will find the Tracy Arm glacier fjord. The main part of the fjords are the glacier twins Sawyer Glaciers, which are easily recognizable due to the bluish ice. Your experience will be enhanced if you invest in a boat ride.
The fjord stretches deep inland, where it extends into the Tongass National Forest. Along the fjord you can see baribal bears, brown bears, deer or moose. In addition, you are likely to see bald eagles flying over the ocean, which are the national symbol of the United States, or long-tailed terns. The local waters are then home to whales and seals.
Third, we will visit other glaciers, this time in the famous Glacier Bay National Park. The beautiful nature together with the various events that can be undertaken here make this place very attractive. In addition to glaciers, one of the main attractions is the temperate rainforest. Hiking trails are located only in the Barlett Cove area and there are also places for camping. In addition, visitors can rent kayaks here. In addition to the previously mentioned animals, you can also observe wolves.
If you want to ski while enjoying the ocean, we have good news for you. This is exactly what the Eaglecrest Ski Area on Douglas Island has to offer. You can reach the city in 20 minutes by car.
