USA, Colorado – The State of the Heart of Stone
There is a mountain state in the southwest United States. It is known for beautiful nature, high mountains, ghost towns, important scientific institutions, and developed agriculture. If you guessed Colorado you are right!
Colorado is called the Centennial State. It is the eight largest state in the USA. Its population makes it 22nd most populous state, there live as many people as in Slovakia. The capital of the state is Denver. The greatest nature wonder are the Rocky Mountains. Their original name in Spanish means red. Neighboring states to Colorado are Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Kansas. There are short borders with Oklahoma, New Mexico, or Arizona.
Great Plains make the east of the state and also the most important crop areas in the United States. Massive Rocky Mountains go across the central parts of the state. These mountains raise above 4000 meters. Mountainous area makes around three quarters of state's territory. There are several important national parks. Also, the Colorado River springs from there. There is also the largest mesa and it's name is Grand Mesa. Also, there are the largest sand dunes in the United State - Great Sand Dunes National Monument. It rains seldom here. Thus, droughts are frequent as well as fire. Urban life is concentrated aroun Denver or Boulder.
Important moment in history of the state is the gold rush which started in Colorado in the mid-19th century. It caused settlement of the state. Many gold rush cities were founded. Later, when gold deposits were exhausted, many such cities ceased to exist. There are still ghost towns as some kind of memorials to this era which are popular among film makers and tourists. For decades, Colorado had been considered a state of bandits and anarchy. This is no longer true, however.
High concentration of scientific research and industry makes it comparable to Scandinavia. Cattle is still bred in large numbers here. Also, wheat is grown. There is manufacture of transportation vehicles or chemical and food products. The social-economic centers of the state are Denver, Boulder, Auroru, Lakewood, Thornton, Colorado Springs, or Aspen. The latter is known rather for its ski resorts. Many famous characters were born in Colorado such as actor Tim Allen, astronaut Karol J. Bobko, band OneRepublic, politician John Kerry etc.
Lastly, we would like to mention couple of the most interesting things about Colorado. For instance, you can find there one of the highest hanging bridges in the world (near Canon City). For over 72 years it was the highest hanging bridge in the world. Every year, Western Stock Show - the world's largest rodeo takes place in the capital of Denver. There is the largest park system in the United States in Colorado (over 200 parks). In 2012, colorado legalized marihuana compsuntion (as one of the few countries in North America). There is much more we could add.
Colorado is the right place for you in case you love the contrast of beautiful plains and high mountains, old style American culture in symbiosis with modern technologies.

On the border of Utah and Arizona is one of the most popular US icons - the Monument Valley. You will see these sandstone rock formations from a distance. The red-orange desert plain around it makes the rocks stand out nicely. When you arrive in this area, do not forget to take a picture of the famous U.S. route 163. You can not leave without a shot of an empty straight road with amazing backgrounds.
Washington D.C. is undoubtedly one of the most visited of American cities. Today we invite you to take a tour with us and see its sights, monuments and nice places.
Fall is coming so we are about to visit a place of revence on our tour across the US. This place is in the town of Arlington.
After our last visit to Pennsylvania, today we travel to the neighboring state of Maryland. The state is known mostly for Camp David – the weekend residence of American presidents. Annapolis is teh state capital. The state is among ten smalles US states by area.
In the following weeks, we are going to visit some of the overlooked places in the USA. We begin our tour on the other end of the Atlantic in Pennsylvania, a state in the northwest of the country.
We have travelled to many places in North America. One of the most recent was Denver. Today we don’t travel far from the largest city of the state of Colorado. We visit Boulder, a neighboring city known for its academic institutions, the Rocky Mountains and particular understanding of how life should be lived.
Across the Atlantic, as we often refer to when we mention the United States, is the capital and the largest city at once of Colorado – Denver. The city of 600 thousand its elevation is exactly 1 mile, about 1.6 kilometers. Therefore, many Americans refer to it as the Mile-High City.
We already introduced you to the areas surrounding Denver. We told you something about its history and today we see its landmarks. But these are not just buildings yet also sport clubs and places in nature. These you definitely shouldn’t miss.
The Tangle Lakes area is a popular camping site. In the region are many fishermen who enjoy their hobby. Tangle of lakes and rivers which going through a hilly landscape offer enough opportunities to catch fish. Today you will enjoy beautiful panoramas.
We mentioned last week the great theme park of Islands of Adventure. One of its sections is home to Marvel super heroes. We also took (albeit imaginary) ride on the Incredible Hulk rollercoaster. As its signature superhero the ride is green and you can even experience zero gravity there.
We left the Islands of Adventure for another theme park of many others surrounding Orlando, Florida. There is a lot to choose from. We, however, take a look at a place that is somewhat closer to us in some respects.
Mauna Kea or in English White Mountain is the main destination in our today’s article.
When you hear Boston you think of a rich history and picturesque streets with brick houses. However, there are other sights in the city you won’t forget. It wouldn’t be always a pleasant experience but they are worth seeing.
According to the original plan we had to rest, however, after mutual agreement we decide to only pass through Fairbanks and continue to Yukon. If we are lucky, we will conquer the Arctic Circle.
Europeans are close to the United States and whole North America and South America in a way. It is because they afflicted both continents irreversibly.
I decided to spent part of Christmas in the former capital of the State of Pennsylvania and the whole United States. During my introductory au-pair course I met a Czech with whom I still stay in touch, she invited me to her home in Philadelphia.
In previous parts of our journey to the United States you could get some notion what to expect of San Francisco and what makes it famous. Also, we have seen one of the most famous prisons, or former prisons in the world, Alcatraz. It is also located in San Francisco.
As you may know from previous part of our story, San Francisco is a tourist friendly city. There are enough attractions and sights to keep you occupied at least for a week without you slipping into boredom.
