Do You Know, That? - The Longest Bridges In CR
So, the longest bridging over, according to spread of main field, is kept by Žďákov Bridge over Orlík Dam, with its length of 543 metres. The arch itself, supporting the construction, has the span of 379,60 metres. The construction of road bridge, connecting the towns of Tábor and Pilsen, was started in 1957, and the dam-work begun to be filled with the water at the same time. The operation was terminated in 1967, whereas total costs reached the amount of CZK 71 millions! The bridge is rising above Orlík Dam in the height of 50 metres, and the distance from dam-bottom makes nearly 100 metres! At the same time, it is the last rivetted bridge bridge of its type, as all the next buildings are welded only. In 2001, the bridge obtained prestigious valuation as A Century Bridge, in a category of local steel road bridges.
As far as the longest bridges are concerned, there is a leader of another type. It is, for sure, Lahovice estacade (system of bridges), over Vltava and Berounka-rivers valley, set in operation recently. This beidge forms a part of freshly opened Prague Circuit, among D1 and D5 highways. Total length of the construction makes 2045 + 236 metres, so approx. 2,3 kilometres. The whole bridging over forms two parts from technical point of view, but, in general, it is taken for a complex. Apart of this, the whole estacade forms the longest bridge construction not only of the Czech Republic, but also of Central Europe!
Till recent time, D8 highway bridge over Ohře-river at the community of Doksany (total length of 1183 metres, finished in 1998), was the longest road bridge of Czech Republic.
To the other important and extensive bridge constructions, belongs, no doubt, Prague Negrelli Viaduct, railway line between Masaryk Railway Station and Bubny Railway Stop, terminated in 1850. This bridge across Vltava-river is 1110 metres long, and it was even the longest bridge in Europe till 1910! From historical point of view, it is the first Prague railway bridge across Vltava-river. This viaduct is constructed in such way, that even the greatest inundations could be overcome, and this fact was proved just during inundation in 2002! Famous ingenieur Alois Negrelli was nominated as the builder.
