Austria, Zell am See – Magical Region in Salzburg
Today we have a trip to the Austrian state of Salzburg, more precisely to the breathtaking Zell am See region, which is famous for ski resorts, beautiful lakes, picturesque villages or majestic mountains.
Our starting point for excursions will be the village at the foot of the legendary Grossglockner - Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße. From here you can explore the beauties of the Fusch and Rauris valleys, Kaprun and Saalbach.
We head to the Fusch valley and set out on the Grossglockner mountain route, which connects the village of Bruck with the Carinthian Heiligenblut. The scenic route leads through mountain pastures with herds of cattle, offering views of the snow-capped alpine peaks and the typical mountain-style architecture of the houses. During your trip, you can stop at several alpine huts, where you can also enjoy homemade specialties. During winter, the valley turns into a ski paradise, while in summer it is a popular place for more demanding hiking.
If you are not a proficient hiker, but like a new experience, we recommend a trip to the village of Saalbach-Hinterglemm, which has a leading ski resort with extensive slopes and a wide range of services. Nature lovers will appreciate the visit of Krimml waterfalls with a total height of 380 meters. For lovers of history, there are the Kaprun Castle and the Saalhof (Pinzgau region) or the narrow-gauge Pinzgauer Lokalbahn.
Our feet took us to Kaprun, which, in addition to the famous Kitzsteinhorn Glacier, Austria's second largest spa complex, the Tauern Spa, and the Wasserfallboden and Mooserboden, offers the beautiful Sigmund-Thun-Klamm gorge. It is a 320-meter-long route that is accessible to tourists on a wooden trail. It offers magnificent views of the gurgling river Kapruner Ach, which flows between huge rock walls.
The Zell am See region offers much more, but as you should rather see it, we recommend planning a trip here. Experience this natural and cultural wealth firsthand.

Do you want to go for beautiful nature, sports and refreshments? Our goal this time will be Upper Austria, which is perfect for summer days. Although many other travelers have a similar idea, we still do not encounter crowded beaches around the local lakes, nor do crowds form on the local ferratas, bike trails and hiking trails.
Today, our goal will be the Austrian village of Saalbach Hinterglemm (consisting of two small towns Saalbach and Hinterglemm) located in the district of Zell am See. The village is a well-known center for almost all winter sports, there is a network of four slopes with a total length of up to 270 kilometers. However, even in summer, a lot of tourists come here.
Austrian town Kaprun located at the foothills of the Hohe Tauern, a very popular tourist destination. It is famous for its ski resort. It is located on snowy slopes of Kitzsteinhorn. There are other very interesting locations around Kaprun such as alpine dams Wasserfallboden and Mooserboden.
The Hohe Tauern national park belongs to the most popular areas in the Austrian Alps. Nature here is nothing but magical. Sharp peaks of two or three thousand meter high rocky giants, alpine lakes, wild nature, vast glacier fields and more. The Hohe Tauern are also popular for mountain hikers and for its numerous winter resorts.
Winter vacation usually means skiing, but a suitably combined sport and exploring interesting places can make us even more interesting leisure time. The ideal conditions for such an enjoyable vacation are the SalzburgerLand - large ski resorts near the stunning historic city, you just want to go there!
The "Stage of the World" (Die Bühne der Welt) nickname is meant to show that the most impressive thing that can be experienced in the world of music is happening here. And maybe it's not just about music, the beautiful and historic city of Salzburg would have survived without a Mozart cult that has been set up for decades.
Me and my friend decided to make a trip. The planning was great. I had look around in many handbooks, searched for inspiration on travel agencies’ websites and so on. Eventually, we agreed upon seeing a beautiful place near Salzburg. The village of Abtenau which would serve as the base for our trips around.
We chose to travel along paid Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse road, a mountain freeway that is 48 kilometers long. But due to various turns and stops it would be quite long…
If you love skiing and snowboarding and you are not beginners, then go to Kitzsteinhorn. It is a glacier in the Alpes in the Hohe Tauern. Snow is there all year long. Kitzsteinhorn is 3203 meters high and situated to the north from the highest mountain in Austria - Grossglockner.
After a few days in Carinthia, in the land of mountains and lakes, we continue on journey again, this time slowly but surely going back to our Czech homeland.
Grossglockner mountain road is ever uppermost crossings, which you can humble in the Alps. The trail leads through one of the most beautiful mountain passes of Europe, which will take you to the heart of the Hohe Tauern.
Everything beautiful has to finish once and sadly our journey, during which we managed to know and visit a lot of remarkable places. What surprised, disappointed us or what we learned? We will try to answer in this last article.
After riding down the slopes around Saalbach we move to mountain Wildenkarkogel’s northern ridge. We follow the directions to Leogang.
There are many high-quality resorts that attract winter sports enthusiasts. When they offer something extra the beter it is from them. Hintertuxer Gletscher resort, or simply Hintertux, offers something extraordinary.
Winter season in this year is, however, too mild, and not too favourable for skiing. You have to look for the snow and skiing possibilities abroad where the conditions for your activities are more favouirable as in Czech Republic.
This time, you travel to Hintertux skiing centre, 550 kms distant, on border of Austria and Italy.
