Canary Islands, Fuerteventura – Hikes on the Island

Published: 9.2.2021
Although Fuerteventura is known for its breathtaking beaches, it is also possible to go hiking here. We bring you interesting tips for a trip. Throw your backpack on your back, sturdy shoes on your feet, and set out to explore the island with us.

You will feel like at the end of the world if you go to Cofete beach, where the mysterious Villa Winter lies. This magical place is located on the southern tip of the island called Jandía. We park at the beginning of the trail and head up the valley. Along the route we are accompanied by ubiquitous goats, sheep and a rugged landscape with amazing scenery. As soon as we finish the ascent and the wind does not blow us away, a stunning view opens up in front of us to the deserted Cofete beach.

Then only the descent to the villa itself continues. It's a mysterious place surrounded by a number of legends, which I can't describe in words how it affects me. It is said that during the war she served the Nazis, who met in it and eventually sailed from it to Latin America. For a small fee we can look inside. Photographs on the walls document the construction of the villa, you can see the remains of a wagon and rails. At the time, it was a magnificent mansion, which is unfortunately now falling into disrepair. We will reach the car on the same way back. We walked 13 kilometers.

The highest mountain of the island of Pico del Zarza (807 m above sea level) is also very close. The trail starts above the town of Moro Jable above the Barceló. Do not take the times on the indicators seriously. We were at the top much earlier. The ascent is not physically demanding at all.

The journey is only disturbed by a really sharp wind. As we begin to approach the top, we enter the clouds. There is such humidity here that our hair is completely wet. The top is in such a small reserve behind the fence, shrubs grow here and the fence serves as protection against local goats. We believe that the shrubs would be saved immediately if they got behind the fence. The route is well maintained and marked there and back, the length is 14 km. If we weren't in the clouds, we would have amazing views.

Fuerteventura completely enchanted us. And even though its interior is relatively empty and arid, with volcanic mountains and plains, it gives it all this beauty.

It is not easy to get to the top of the Pico del Teide volcano. You have to get permission, which is free, but I recommend to apply for it at least a few weeks in advance. The reason is the limited capacity of 200 people per day. But we got to the top of the crater differently.
