Canary Islands, Fuerteventura – Lobos Island

Published: 27.4.2021
The Canary Islands are one of the popular holiday destinations, which is still inclined to travel today. Of course, PCR tests are needed before departure from the Czech Republic, antigen tests before returning to the Czech Republic and PCR tests again after returning home. However, the services are slowly becoming cheaper, so holidays on these exotic islands are becoming more financially enjoyable every day.

The second largest island of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean is Fuerteventura. Tips for trips around this beautiful island can be found in an article here. Today, however, we will go on a trip to a small island that is part of Fuerteventura, which is only a 15-minute boat ride (2 km) from the northern town of Corralejo.

To enter the island, you need permission from the government, which can be arranged online. However, for a very minimal amount, it is also mediated by a company that will also transport you to the island. This is a nature reserve, which was declared here in 1982. The name Lobos was given to the island after the earlier occurrence of seals, which unfortunately no longer inhabit the island, with the discovery of the island by the Spaniards, these animals were gradually exterminated. They occur here only today in exceptional cases.

Tiny Lobos is of volcanic origin, as is the entire archipelago of the Canary Islands, but its landscape is definitely more varied than the "lunar plain" of Fuerteventura. There is even a small lake, full of species of plants and birds. The highest point is 127 meters high Montaña La Caldera. To the northeast is the Punta Martiño lighthouse. On the opposite side is the accessible Playa de la Concha beach in a quiet bay.

Boats with visitors arrive every day in the local small port, from where the trail leads across the island. It is forbidden to walk outside the marked path. The trail passes through a small settlement, over cliffs, desert and vegetation. You can visit the mentioned lighthouse, from where there is a wonderful view over the whole Lobos and the opposite island of Lanzarote. It is possible to continue to Montaña La Caldera, which is not very high, but many tourists sweat when climbing steeply. From here there is a beautiful view of Corralejo and the surrounding beaches of Fuerteventura.

The longest route around the whole island is about ten kilometers and it is ideal to end it just while relaxing on the beach. It is also possible to visit the only local restaurant, which is located near the port, but find out if it is currently in operation.

We can highly recommend a visit to the island of Lobos. This is one of the most beautiful places in Fuerteventura, but do not forget about proper footwear, the trails are rocky.

It is not easy to get to the top of the Pico del Teide volcano. You have to get permission, which is free, but I recommend to apply for it at least a few weeks in advance. The reason is the limited capacity of 200 people per day. But we got to the top of the crater differently.
