China: By Journalists Eye XVIII: In A Carpet Factory Or Life Of Happy Worker

Published: 15.9.2012
We are still in the far northwest of China, in the region, which is interwoven with Tibetan culture and history. After dense doses our Beijing hosts are served us bait to persuade Europeans ignorant about the interest of the central government in the development of local underdeveloped economy, improving people's living standards while maintaining support all the attributes of the original culture

This time, our journey leads to the factory for the production of carpets - they have had from time immemorial among the Tibetan crafts one of the privileged places.

We parked in front of modern prefabricated building stands on a "green field", far and wide nothing. Management welcome us wear in white coats and thru open door we rush directly into the factory. At first glance, it's a real luxury. Airy, clean, spacious, modern weaving machines, the smell of sheep's wool. The vast space we see work stations, which always define a production phase.

Accompanied and interpretation of one of the production chiefs we walk among the giant machines, weavers machine, which - as we proudly emphasizes local engineer - are partially controlled by computer. Nearby, but I'm looking at a number of women sitting at tables with fibers between their fingers – here they said computer can´t help - lumps of worker threads remove manually. Higher level must be group of seamstresses. They sit in long rows and uniforms for their machines without moving a muscle and make small tapestry.

Me personally, but the most attractive women sitting on carpets spread on the ground and in different twisted positions them nag with kind of hook. I coming closer, squats on my heels and try to discover what this work is about. Lovely smiling girl suggests to me, that I should look carefully - aha! Carpet has ones a time from his back side a nodule, or decay. Her mission, therefore, is to catch all flaws and tweak carpet to perfection.

I do not feel quite right when I looking at quite monotonous work of local workers, I wonder, whether it would not be better off at home in the mountains with yaks and sheep. I wonder if he sought the job themselves or "someone" convinced that this is the beginning of a promising life colourful. And so I ask tiny and maybe forty years old women, how is she satisfied in factory.

He looks shyly and responds that she like her work, said she came here from some car and that it's much better and earns a lot of money. In addition, there she has accommodation and food, as well as everyone else, doesn’t need anywhere commute and once a month can see her family. "And that's amazing." Hmmm, probably for the company that is awesome, but I think, the life of workers, I did not seem that appealing.

"You sit all day on the ground, all twisted, your back must hurt," I say to myself and I guess I have a little suffering expression. The lady answers me with a calm face that about the health of the employees, the management company takes such good care: every two hours loudspeakers are turned on, you will hear the music and facilitator who guides the workers exercise. When 5 minutes stretching and exercise the body, you sing, now they are working well again. That would be a simple step to improve job performance?

The beauty of carpets I am not able to admire, I am more interested in people. The great salary means two thousand Yuan, that is the equivalent of our five thousand crowns. From it each of them pays room and food, which is about 300 Yuan per month. Working hours are officially forty hours a week, but the workers were "like working overtime" and cleverly law allows 36 hours of overtime per month.

Sure, why not take advantage of the labour force to the maximum. Although it is not apparent on the Chinese market lacks workers. One-child policy was reflected negatively on the labour market. They are not people, and so local companies for great support of the state attract poor and often illiterate villagers in their networks, dazzle them with money and the alleged certainty.

Am looking for the workers, where they are, how far it is to not keep them home and marvel - some of them arrived from neighbouring provinces and the home is divided into more than a thousand kilometres. Children left at home, men, parents ... it should be a happy process towards a flourishing country? It saddens me and I stop to ask them, it is better ...
