Costa Rica – Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park

Published: 27.7.2019
After visiting the exotic Puerto Jimenez and the surf paradise of Matapala, we take a bus along the Pacific coast to the north. Our next stop is Quepos and we are still in the province of Puntaneras. Quepos is about 60 kilometers from the capital of Costa Rica - San José - and is a kind of gateway to the popular tourist park Manuel Antonio.

We are staying in a great and affordable hostel (private rooms also) Wide Mouth Frog, where guests have a swimming pool, sun loungers, fitness room or a huge dining room with kitchenette. Breakfast is included and cooked great for perhaps the best prices in Costa Rica. The staff is incredibly helpful and in English can handle absolutely anything, there are also plenty of trips or surfing courses. The accommodation is just a few steps from the bus station and offers everything a classic backpacker on his own can wish for.

Manuel Antonio National Park only allows a certain number of tourists (but still it is more than enough), so we set out to visit early in the morning. Along the way, countless guides with huge telescopes offer their services, but in the end we will conclude that we can do without them, which will be confirmed. We pay $ 16 and go on a wooden path to the park. There are several paths through the park, which often lead to the coast, where you can swim on beautiful beaches.

Just after a few steps we see the first sloth high in the treetops. And then we will find reunions with monkeys, large blue-red crabs, and all sorts of birds. Right at the first opportunity we set out on the right at the crossroads. This then seems like a great idea, because the large crowds of tourists continue straight ahead and we get to the almost deserted beach. The water is clear and pleasant, the company makes us, with the exception of a few other tourists, an intrusive raccoon and a few shy iguanas. We take a swim and continue along the coast to a wooden lookout, after which the destination of groups of guided hikers is located. It is another beautiful beach, but already overpopulated and yet full of annoying monkeys, who are constantly trying to get some food from tourists and steal everything they manage.

A little further away there are snacks, toilets and showers. We still set out on one of the circuits that turns off the main route, but the climb on a hot summer day then really exhausts us and slowly heads towards the exit. Along the way, we are fortunate to have another sloth resting just a few meters in the branches above us.

After visiting the park, we shop for a few souvenirs and head to the beach for refreshments. Beware, in the local restaurants, the price for food is usually quoted exclusive of tax and service charge, which is almost another quarter. Various events for bargain drinks prices are also far from paying off. The beach is very nice and you can try surfing. The instructors are skilful, and in just a moment you will go down the first wave. After the lesson, you will even take great photos in memory. The day is coming to an end and we are returning by city bus back to Quepos.

In addition to the Quepos National Park and the surrounding area, it offers another amazing spectacle. It is a beautiful sunset over the sea.

From Panama, we head northwards to neighboring country of Costa Rica. First we choose a flight to the town of David, which is relatively close to the Costa Rica border, and the interstate flights are very convenient. From there we take the bus to the border, the journey with the locals is really cheerful, but we are well on the way - the small port town of Golfito. Just be careful that the customs officers do not forget to stamp your passport, which is a little messy. Otherwise, you will cause many problems. On the border there is a duty-free zone, many locals come here for shopping and there is really a great bustle, at the same time there is a lot of restaurants and various kiosks where you can refresh yourself.

After visiting Quepos and the beautiful Manuel Antonio National Park, we set out on another journey through beautiful Costa Rica. Along the Pacific coast we take a local bus to Puntaneras, located on a small promontory in the Gulf of Nicoya and is the capital of the province of the same name.

Nicaragua – A One-Day Trip from Costa Rica

After visiting the picturesque Montezuma, we move to the north for the last time. The destination is the city of Liberia, but it will only be our starting point for the next two trips. The first is a visit to Costa Rica's northern neighbor, Nicaragua. You can go on your own or with an organized tour. However, we recommend the latter option, as crossing the border is not easy. The guides already know how to walk right and save you a few hours of waiting.

We still dwell in the north in the town Liberia, from which we had the opportunity to go on a day trip yesterday and experience how beautiful neighboring Nicaragua is. We have a lot places to cross, so today we finally intend to go on a proper tourist trip.

Today a great journey is upon us for we leave Liberia and head to the east coast of Costa Rica, which is washed by the Caribbean Sea. We go to Tortuguero National Park (Parque nacional Tortuguero), located in the province of Limón. The name Tortuguero comes from the Spanish word tortuga - tortoise. The park covers an area of 312 km² and also has a small village. You can only get here by boat or plane.

Costa Rica – Puerto Jiménez and Matapalo

Approximately thirty minutes of drive from the town of Golfito to the small port of Puerto Jiménez, a small town in the province of Puntaneras on the Osa Peninsula. It is probably the cheapest and fastest way (about half to three quarters of an hour) to get to this southern tip of Costa Rica. There is also a regular flight here because there is a small airport in Puerto Jiménez. However, it only holds about 4 passengers, and the flight price is countless higher than for cruises. At the same time, if you are lucky, dolphins will join you on a short journey.

Panama, Ciudad de Panamá – The City and the Panama Canal

Panama is a relatively bland country that lies in the shadow of Costa Rica's increasingly touristy tourist destination, with the infamous Colombia on its other side. Nevertheless, a large number of flights to Central America are conducted through Tocumen International Airport, which is located 24 kilometers from the capital city of Panama. And because there are good land and air links between Central American states, there are more to visit in one trip. They accept classic US dollars everywhere (although with a worse exchange rate), so there is no need to exchange money and the Panamanian Balboa has the same exchange rate.
