CZ: Milotice Castle – Baroque Pearl in a Wine-Growing Region
The south Moravian town of Milotice is located just 6 kilometers southward from Kyjov, a town known for folk traditions. Nearby you may find such centers of wine-growing such as Bzenec, Kobyli or Velke Pavlovice. When heading to Palava or Mikulov you should visit Valtice and famous Lednice complex.
Milotice is a castle the original look of which used to be different. The very first 
notice about a stronghold surrounded by moat comes from the year 1341. In the time of the Hussite Wars , Milotice were almost untouched for they were among the popular places. Thus marching armies didn’t plunder it. However, soon the stronghold didn’t fulfill requests of its owners and after years in decay it underwent a renaissance reconstruction towards the end of the 16th century. A one-story renaissance castle was built in the Bernard Ludvik Tovar of Enczesfeld’s dominion.
A construction then underwent several construction adjustments, extensions and it got one more floor in the second half of the 17th century. Four groins and towers were made in that time.
A baroque look of the castle originates in the years 1719 – 1743. A new owner of the castle initiated the renovation on the beginning of the 18th century. It was Karel Antonin Serényi. The castle with four two-storey wings has rich interior decoration, several halls, mostly the the Ancestors Hall. The castle’s chapel, library and vast collection of paintings are enriched by a view to the well-maintained French park. Except cultural events there are regularly held bird of prey shows. Behind the castle’s walls there continues the English park and a period pheasantry
Such an interesting locality indeed attracts shootings of fairytales. In fact, Milotice is a place where several movies were shot like Za humny je drak, 
Frog Prince, Nebojsa or movies such as Elizabeth’s Court, A Night in the Castle, Muzi v riji and others.
Except its beautiful decorations etc. the castle is known for its quite terrifying legend. It is about a chaplain preaching in the castle’s chaple every night. He is allegedly accompanied by a phantom of the black countess…
Among all events held there or nearby we should mention the Feast of Vracov . It is perhaps the largest food, drink and folk festival in Moravia. It took place on the last weekend in October.
