CZ, Moravian Karst – Macocha Nature Trail II
Published: 28.10.2015
Our walk along the Macocha Nature trail led us to the bottom cable car station which was launched in May 1995. We found ourselves at the altitude of about 361 meters. Our goal was Horni Mustek above the Macocha abyss. Horni Mustek is more than 130 meters higher.
We were thinking if we should take a cable car up or we walk to the top. This decision making took part at an information table which told us that 353 persons per hour is the maximum capacity of the cable car. It can go 2.5 meters a second and it takes 2 minutes and 20 seconds to get to the top. Eventually, we decided to go afoot as true mountaineers would do. We were in Vyvery Punkvy National Nature Reservation. We could see beautiful cars canyons, gorges, and small or large caves which are an important place for bats to overwinter.
It didn’t take us long to get to the place called Devil’s Gate which is a relict of what was once old flow cave. Also, this one was a stop at the nature trail. It was a klippe with a small tunnel inside. Of course, there are several such karst formations. However, this one is easy to access and it looks great at photos. We discovered couple caves around the Devil’s Gate. Also, we found cave flora which flourishes on limestone and in humidity..
Couple of meters further we got to a direction board, a map and a bench. We were at the place known as Pod Salmovkou. We could either continue on to Blansko or back to Rocky Mill. Yet we were eaded to Macocha. We went along moderately ascending forest path with a side rail along it. We changed our direction couple of times but the red, then green, and the blue trail eventually got us to Dolni Mustek after walking two kilometers. There we finally saw Macocha in all its glory.
Except for wonderful space surrounded with rocks we saw the edge of Macocha. All those who love deep natural formations can come here. The entrance is from the side of the Punkevni Caves. However, you have to book your tickets in advance. An information board is right at the Dolni Mustek observation platform. It said that Amaterska cave is the largest cave in the Czech Republic . More than twenty kilometers is the length of its corridors. Other caves are connected to it suc has Punekvni, S Sloupsko-Sosuvska, or Old and New Rasovna, Pikova Dama and other. Combined this cave system is 34 kilometers long. The cave is in the shape of the letter Y. Founded it was in 1969 by amateur cavers.
We enjoyed beautiful nature’s scenery . This was our goodbay to the Macocha abyss. We headed down to Horni Mustek. Our experience there is, however, the matter of the following article which will come out next week.
GPS: 49°22'24.1"N 16°43'45.2"E (Macocha abyss)

When I have learned recently that Lonely Planet declared Brno the least interesting city in the Czech Republic I couldn’t understand. Then I realized that it was good they said it after all. Had crowds of tourists been going there every day as they go to Prague it would soon loose its magic. Brno is a city of universities, fun, culture and many small, lovely places. The turning clock in the shape of a male genitalia from which a small glass ball falls out every hour. Smoking road signs are really to be found only here… New York Times was much more smarter. They put Brno on the list of 52 places where to go in 2016!

We cant avoit a visit to Spilberk castle, Villa Tugendhat (under UNESCO) and a functionalist borough around it. Of course, we are going to have a taste of the night life, great beer or wine, and we are going to see some glimpses of local students ’life. So let’s get started!

It was a forgotten borderline town. Nobody would travel there. Today, it is a growing center of wine where many talented people work. Valtice town is, like Lednice, part of the UNESCO world heritage. Apart from beautiful Renaissance-Baroque chateau or a park, there is the famous Wine Saloon, two beautiful churches, a number of interesting houses, as well as several buildings scattered across the Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape. We recommend you to spend at least couple of hours in Valtice while on you are on your trip across south Moravia. However, the best would be to spend a whole day there.

We are going to conclude our mini-series on Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape in podivin. It is a small town on the way to D2 freeway. This town doesn´t belong to the compound. However, it would be a missed opportunity to not to see it. A uniqe Jewish wedding ceremonial hall or Januv castle (a Liechtenstein structure imitating historical architectonic styles) are just a few to name some landmarks. We are not completely sure how the name Podivin came into existence…
