France, French Riviera V: Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël – VIDEO

Published: 20.10.2015
Saint-Tropez is undoubtedly the most beautiful town along the French Riviera. So many visitors come there during the high season you don’t have a chance to properly enjoy it. Yet we offer you an alternative, two towns located near Saint-Tropez. Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël are two town between Cannes and Toulonem. They are not less enjoyable than the said Saint-Tropez. Moreover, they unravel much from the history as interesting sights form the Roman times are still there.

Fréjus’ historic core was formed during the Middle-Ages and like only few other towns’ it is further from the shore. That’s why there was enough space for hotels and guest houses to be built along the coastline. But it is not far to the beach. On the other hand, Saint-Raphaël was founded as a port and the oldest part of it lays on a small peninsula. Both towns are connected. Both towns have bus lines and are connected to railway. In Saint-Raphaël, TGV trains stop on their way to Paris as well as EuroCity train that comes from Milano. Near the town, A8 freeway will take you to Nice, Marseille, and Aix-en-Provence.

St Maxim Church’s construction was commenced by Charles II of Sicily at the end of the 13th century. It was finished during the 15th century and today it is an example of the most interesting architecture in south France. In this tomb you can see graves dating to the first century A.D.” says the guide and adds: “Also, according to the legend, the head of St Mary Magdalene should lay in here.” There are many Roman sights which withstood raids of barbars, pirates, and Muslims. Among them is the rest of the Gate of Oreus, aqueduct, or Roman cathedral

Fréjus’ medieval center looks a lot like other towns along the French Riviera. Still, for me it looked somehow interesting. Perhaps, the long history and erudition of Romans still has influence over the locals. Maybe it is this what gives this place better atmosphere. Just sit for a while in front of the old town hall and observe what is happening around. Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël are towns famous for their art and cultural scene. Just choose among theaters, concerts, exhibitions, markets, or visit some wine and cheese tasting.

Of course, you can choose from some maintained sand beaches that offer lots regarding sporting activities and entertainment. Or you can go into the hills above the town. There you can see the infamous Malpasset dam. It burst and destroyed large share of the town and killed 421 people in 1959.

Saint-Raphaël

In case you want to spend more time at one place along the French Riviera, then Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël should be considered as hot candidates.

„When they want to get rid of them, rich Parisians send their children here to study at the university. So, it is expensive here but the life is vibrant,“ says Louis about his home-town, a guy I met during my stay there. Indeed, for a long time I haven’t been to a place that would have so much of student atmosphere yet it wasn’t flooded with “poor” hipster cafes. Add more than two thousand years of history, narrow streets with old houses made of sandstone and friendly inhabitants of Provence. This makes almost perfect image of one of the most famous towns in the south of France.
