Georgia, Kutaisi – Beautiful Nature and Many Landmarks

Published: 6.10.2018
Georgia is a country situated in the southeast of Europe and south-west Asia. In the eastern edge of Georgia, there is the Black Sea. Its neighbors are in the north and northeast of Russia, in the south of Turkey and Armenia, and in the south-east of Azerbaijan.

You can get to Georgia in many ways, but the best of course is the plane; from Prague, even direct flights fly to Kutaisi. On the spot I recommend buying a SIM card, which has a signal even in the mountains.

Kutaisi is the second largest city in Georgia after Tbilisi. And a lot of interesting things are waiting for you. In the main square of David the Builder Square you will find an impressive fountain. The Kolchid Fountain is decorated with magnified copies of 30 Colchid fountain. Previously, the church was standing here, then the statue of Stalin. The fountain was built in 2011.

Furthermore, you can visit Bagrati Cathedral, located above the city on Ukimerioni Hill, high above the Rioni River. It is listed on the UNESCO list. The first sight of it was truly unbelievable, the cathedral is in all its beauty towering on a hill with a beautiful view of the city and its surroundings.

Our next stop was the Prometheus Cave, which is less than 22 km from Kutaisi. The entrance to the cave is 20 GEL (approx. 180 CZK), but we bought a COMBO ticket for 50 GEL, which includes 4 entrances to Prometheus Cave, Okatse Canyon, Gachedili Canyon and Sataplia National Park. There is also the possibility to go by boat. First we headed to Prometheus Cave. A tour with an English-speaking guide takes about 40 minutes and you will walk about 2 km underground. The cave is full of stalagmites and stalactites of various shapes. The whole is lit by colored lights. The last part of the tour leads along the underground river. In these places the tour ends, but only for those who do not have a paid boat. So we're going to the boat, we're making helmets and vests and going to the finish. After landing, we are just waiting for a mausk (a kind of public transport mainly in the countries of the former Soviet Union, the Balkans and Turkey), which will take us back to the gate.

Then we get back into the car and head for Martvili to Gachedili Canyon. We already have tickets, so we'll pay for the boat again and we'll get off. This boat-like attraction is also good for children. We'll jump into the inflatable boat and drive for about 10 minutes upstream, then we turn around and drive back. We hike on a trail along the canyon after the landing.

The first day we spent in Georgia was a great one. We were excited about local nature and great food. People are very nice everywhere. Definitely all these places are worth visiting.

Today, Balda Canyon will be a stop we will focus on. It is less than 12 km from the town of Martvili. Finding it is quite challenging. When we wanted to cross the river, the local master came over. We did not understand it, but it did. We do not say the river because there are sharp stones, but there is a waterfall at 200 meters.

Mestia is a beautiful mountain town situated 128 km northeast of the regional city of Zugdidi. It belongs to the most picturesque parts of the country and is rightly called the Georgian Switzerland. It has a lot in common with the Alpine country. Not only for the beautiful landscape of green pastures under the glacial mountains, but also the sheer volume of tourists.

Georgia – From Mestia to Ushguli

There is only one way to go from Mesti to Ushgul. It can be reached by car, taxi, carriage (which is local form of public transport), but it can also be stopped. The way leads towards the Ughviri Pass. However, consider the unpaved terrain. As soon as we passed the Ughviri Pass, we rode the serpentines into the first village. It is a human being that comes from the conditions in which people live.
